I was a public customer for a long time but briefly went to Telus. Trying to port my number back I think it crashed mid-way through and when I tried to get Public Customer service ticket I'm getting an error XXX. I have no service after more than 5 hours and no temporary number.

Thanks so I went back to my telus sim from what I can tell I never got a permission to port from Telus

Oh I misread. You're porting FROM Telus back to Public?
If that's the case you should have received a text from Telus asking permission to port. You need to reply YES before the port is complete. You may need to put your Telus SIM card back in for the port to complete. I'd also wait till the name Telus at the top was gone. Test a call and if you can't make a call on your Telus SIM card, then you know the port is complete.

There is a number to call to talk to live support, they can re-trigger the process for you. I will message the number to you via the Community inbox ( https://productioncommunity.publicmobile.ca/t5/notes/privatenotespage ) . Check the envelope icon on top right.
But the call centre is closed now, Call them tomorrow morning and get it fixed

Did you get a text message on PM confirming port? If you said yes, contact Telus customer service for assistance.
