last week I had to update my credit card to continue my plan. eventually it went through, but I cannot make calls. when I try to make a payment now it says I can make one when the plan expires. I cannot make calls even locally, I just get a voice mail that I do not have a particular addon, even though I have talk and text.

Login to your account and check:
a) was payment recorded,
b) is account status "Active"
c) is plan correct
Elements incorrect, then send a private message to the moderator team with your phone number and an explanation. It may be tomorrow before you have a response. Perhaps, confirm email notification of private messages is ON to see their response as soon as it arrives.
Meanwhile, if you need to make phone calls try an application like that from fongo.com. It provides free calling across Canada from wherever you are connected to wifi.
