I think I understand what a SIM card is, not sure about ESIM cards. I will be traveling abroad in Jan 2024, if I get a ESIM card now will it still be valid then? I'm not sure how long it would be active?

The advantage of the SIM is just popping it out from the old phone to new phone.
I use eSIM when travelling and get a local eSIM on my PM SIM in my iPhone 14 Pro Max.

first, not every phone has eSIM support, check if yours has it
If you are currently using physical sim, there is really no need to change to eSIM. Physical sim is sometimes easier to swap phone
eSIM is just a new way to connect to the mobile network with the physical sim card
If you are travelling, assuming you are going to another country that you need mobile service and PM does not has service there, you can use buy travel eSIM for that country instead. If you use eSIM of that other mobile service, you just have to download the app and install the eSIM. Of course, you can still buy traditional physical sim card for the local mobile provide there. If you use local sim , physical, then just remove PM's sim card and insert the other sim card
here is a bit more about what is eSIM
