esim and voice calls

happytooth
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

I will be travelling to New Zealand and Japan, I will leave my Public mobile sim card in my phone and I will be purchasing an additional data only e-sims for each country.  My phone supports e-sims.

I want to be able to make voice calls and keep my public mobile phone #.

If

I leave my public mobile (primary) sim on and turn off data roaming for Public mobile.

Then  will choose my e-sim as my phone's source of data by switching off  "allow cellular data"

next  turn on data roaming for the e-sim .

Will I be able to make voice calls and text without roaming charges????

Would there be any charges from Public mobile for the voice calls or texts???. If so what would these charges be for Voice calls ? .

Thanks for your help

@happytooth As you have eSIM, check out this service: https://www.airalo.com/   to go with textnow or fongo.

As mentioned PM only works in Canada or with an add on in USA.

If you like the idea of picking up some data only sims then consider voip.ms and an app called Zoiper. When you are back home you can keep voip.ms and set up an account that shows your PM number for caller ID. You can use voip.ms in any country over wifi or data.

@happytooth  No, leaving it PM sim on the phone won't  do anything as PM does not have roaming service in New Zealand and Japan

However, you can choose to leave it there , so you don't like to pop it out, and it won't do any harm either

You can try to use VoIP app TextNow to make voice call (on another 10 digits number) and text.  It is free.  it will work as long as you have Wifi or local mobile there.

But if you need to receive 2FA code, make sure you change it to email or Authenticator app as you won't be receiving text there on your PM sim.

@happytooth

Your PM SIM card/service will be completely unusable in Japan and New Zealand.

It's only usable in Canada, and in the US with US Add-On purchases.

As such, any other options you elect to use for service whilst there (be it local SIM prepaid cards, etc) will have no impact/charges/effect at all against Public Mobile, which is a PREPAID service provider.

No surprise charges or billing at all here.

@happytooth

Sorry but PM only has roaming for the USA. No where else.

You won't be able to use PM service while outside of Canada.  It's not an option.
