if you run out of data usage, do you have to wait for the next billing cycle or can you add data immediately ?

You can do either.
A good rule of thumb may be to wait till the next renewal if you're only a few days away from it.
Depending on your recent and expected ongoing data use (and whether you may already be on the top $50 plan) you may also wish to consider upgrading your plan for the next renewal so you don't run into the situation of having used your allotment before the end of the cycle.

You could purchase an add-on 1 GB is $15 and remains in your account until used up. The other option is to renew early but you could lose any unused minutes or texts.

@georgewintle : You also have two other options:
1. ask moderators to renew the plan early
2. change plans to a different plan
You lose what you've already paid as there is no pro-rating here and you start anew with a new term.

Add-ons work right away, and the Data add-ons don't "expire" - whatever you don't use up will carry forward until you use it up. Your regular monthly data allotment will be used before using up the Add-ons.
Just make sure you have enough Balance in your account before buying an add-on. For example, do a manual one-time top-up first before buying the Add-on (since it deducts from your Balance). Otherwise, you will get an error. 🙂
