I've tried to join many times. Every time I add my existing phone number, it says to enter a valid Canadian number. I don't want to change my number. Can someone help with this?

And now I have more understanding of how to interpret the pages for this sorta rare problem of not being able to port. If Telus has no prefix in the rate centre then another provider number can't be ported in. So it seems a prospective Rogers family customer can't port into that area either.
From what I saw, a customer couldn't port a Carmanville number to Rogers either. Isn't Local Calling Guides' main purpose to tell you if a call is local? As for CNAC, this is an official source for which numbers have been allocated to carriers.
For this case, the information can be viewed at: CO Code Status for NPA 709 (cnac.ca)

@computergeek541 , did you get the city-provider information from the CNAC site? how to check ? Something interesting that I want to know more. thanks

There are some cases when the rate centre name is different than expected, but that's a matter of being able to find it in the list. That list does actually say which rate centres that a carrier is allowed to use. If a carrier that doesn't have its own phone numbers for that same location, a nunber can't be ported in from there.

You could take a new phone from a different city, but others might have to pay long distance fees to reach you.

Of course activation chat or moderators could look up if the number is eligible, but not based on just customers saying that they're in Newfoundland. Porting eligibility can be looked up in a database but either the area code and next 3 digits or the rate centre name are needer. We can't really be sure that's the issue though quite yet, but the possibility remains that the number might not be eligible to port to Public.
For sure, makes sense @computergeek541 - thanks
Just hoping we can get the OP the best source of advice to help them establish whether they can join.
They've provided the first 7 digits in subsequent post, wonder if that's helpful to anyone here to examine. That's in or around Carmanville, NFLD.
Seems the OP feels their area is ineligible.

Apparently the others I was referring to in my community have a different area code. I guess I can’t join public mobile.

That seems kinda ridiculous, doesn't it @computergeek541 (not 'you' ridiculous, the message... 😉)
There has to be a way for Public Mobile to conclusively inform this user the eligibility of porting their number to their area of use.
Would the folks at live activation assistance or the porting number have that kind of access to that kind of information? If not, perhaps PM staff could inquire up the TELUS chain of command?
@nettajg , can you supply the Community name in NFLD, and the first 7 digits of others in your immediate vicinity using Public Mobile services (i.e. the ?'s in ???-????-1234). Please do not supply anyone's full number.

Well "cities" would be a stretch....but if communities are are limited to one exchange then yes I see your point.

I believe that at this point, it would not be wise for the OP to continue with the activation. Until it's known which city that the OP is tyring to port a number from, this could quite possiblity lead to a sitution in which the person has to take a phone number from a didfferent city and is unable to port the phone number in. Not all phone numbers can be ported in. if the phone number is from a city that Telus Mobility/Public Mobile does not offer numbers for, a number from that same city cannot be ported in.
You stated that others in your community have Public Mobile service. Which city is that and are they actually using phone numbers assigned for that city or numbers from a different city?

With the same area code and prefix as yours?
Try either contacting the moderator as just suggested or the "live activation assistance" folks might be able to clarify:
https://chat.telus.com/chat/publicmobile/chat-pm.html?portal=publicmobile&language=en
To contact a moderator, there are 2 methods:
Watch for their response in your Community private mailbox which will be indicated by a number on the small envelope icon to the left of your Community avatar.

This is really strange.
Do you have one of those new areas codes?
The only thing I can suggest is to send private message to Moderator_Team
They may be able to figure out what is happening

Others in my community have service with public mobile.

I'll ask the obvious question.
Are you entering a Canadian number, @nettajg ? I've read other posts with similar problem but believe it is rare.
Unless you're porting from Koodo pre-paid (thus, see above post), I might try the live activation assistance here, https://chat.telus.com/chat/publicmobile/chat-pm.html?portal=publicmobile&language=en
03-19-2021 10:44 AM
@nettajg : Can you try with just the numbers? No other characters? This is during activation right? You could also take a new number and then transfer later.

Which city is the phone number from? Not all numbers can be ported in. Also, if it's a Koodo prepaid number, you need to activate with a new number first and then ask the moderators afterwards to perform the number port.
