Winnipeg Network - 3G shutdown in Manitoba

samedi989

I was fine this morning making and receiving phone calls, but as of 11am I cannot make any calls or receive them. My data still work.... tried another phone of mine (older model) same issues. Current phone in use is a Huawei p30 Pro.

Tried rebooting, removing sim, replacing to another phone, restarting, shutting down 10+mins, change carrier manually, Airplane mode... not sure if I'm missing anything.

Suggestions?

hi @jamie_

i don't think a US phone would make any difference

and yes, S22 is VoLTE compatible, and will work.  For over a year, I was using S22 and VoLTE works without problem

try Reset network settings and open ticket with PM support agent for help.

submit a ticket with CS Agent using Chatbot here:

I am having the same issue can not send or receive calls, but still get text and data. I am using a Samsung Galaxy S22. I have checked and it shows as compatible with VoLTE. I tried my SIM in my wife's IPhone and was able to make calls. So no issues with my SIM card. I believe after looking at at my CSC, it does show XAA. Not sure if that will have any affects as it seems to be a code for the US.

Your issue is due to VoLTE , end of 3G

https://www.publicmobile.ca/en/get-help/articles/3g-shutdown

Currently, the sunset has been initiated in Manitoba (Rural & Winnipeg / Brandon)

Starting March 1st 2027, Telus & Bell will begin shutting down their 3G network, which includes Public Mobile, Koodo, along with the shared partnership with Bell, Virgin Plus, Lucky Mobile, PC Mobile, and No Name Mobile. Telus will follow suit with Rogers, which did it on July 31st, 2025.

This will most likely be a gradual change, where some locations (most likely Urban) would have their antenna's removed, so after March 1st, 2027, expect that 3G signal can be removed at any date.

This will affect users by:

  • Not having a 5G / LTE or Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) compatible device.
  • Living in a location that only receives the 3G network (Rural locations)
  • iOT 3G devices (usually only applies to business based iOT Cellular devices)

Solutions:

  • Buy an Amazon Renewed Smartphone for around $100 at minimum (make sure it is 2020 or newer for iPhone, and 2022 for most Androids to ensure manufacturer software updates)
  • Get a cell-phone booster for $150-$300 to enhance the 5G / LTE Signal in your home.

Issues with the shutdown:

  • When Telus national Data outage recently, I found that LTE and 5G core networks were nonfunctional, while the 3G core (which I guess might be connected but not the same system) still worked, and I got up to around 8mbps.
  • Voice Over LTE phones not supported by the carrier - not usually an issue with Telus and Public Mobile, but other carriers such as Bell may differ.
  • Range - I tend to find the 3G network sometimes reaches further for emergency Voice and SMS texting (since on iPhone 3G that has around less than 3 bars makes data load halt).

Whoever posted this today, I just want you to know that you are not the only one. It works for me but not for my spouse who has a Samsung Galaxy S10+. They too can send and receive texts but not calls. Curious what you found out.

just finished trying with an older phone Samsung A17 model, again, not functioning according to the PublicMobile site, but can make and receive calls on that phone. Both phones have the compatibility on the mobile network settings to function, yet huawei doesn't function and the Samsung does.

i was with telus prior to switching, since this is part of the company umbrella still doesn't make sense @hairbag1 @BKNS27

@Drewisupset

If you’re also in Manitoba and experiencing similar service upset… you likely need a newer cellphone also.

Same issue.

Upgrade to a new Public Mobile compatible device...I use iPhone SE 2020 but there are other compatible devices out there.

@samedi989

There must be a delay in shutting down 3G in your area. It was to be shutdown on March 32/26. You were lucky to have service for 14 additional days.

There are going to be a lot of similar issues with members with older phones.

@samedi989

You need a different cellphone that is VoLTE recognised with Public Mobile. Here's something to help clarify and a device checker at the bottom of the page...
