US data use

SteveCurler
Great Neighbour / Super Voisin

I have just purchased the special $34 - 50GB within Canada and the US data plan. Does anyone know what will happen when I cross in the US...will I get a notification, do I have to do anything or will my phone just keep on working as if I was at home?

Thanks - Stevecurler

I go to the US every couple of weeks, and the text notifications are hit and miss. You don't need it though. And ignore it if it tells you to buy a roaming add-on.

To ensure a seamless experience you need to check the following settings on your device:

1) Enable Data Roaming

2) Set Network Selection to AUTOMATIC

3) Change Preferred Network to 4G/LTE (vs 5G) because 5G AT&T doesn't work for us.

For phone calls to work you'll want to ensure you have a VoLTE capable device:

No notifications SHOULD show but sometimes the system is wonky. You can just leave your phone settings as is. If it's not already on, you will need to go into your settings and turn on data roaming. As long as your phone network settings are set to automatic, it should find the right network to work. If you're having issues, choose T-Mobile and reboot. I'll be heading to the US shortly. It's so nice not having to purchase add ons anymore

@SteveCurler  You will most likely get notification , but when in the US ensure you have data roaming turned on in phone settings . And you’re connected to T mobile or AT&T . Also set phone to 4G/LTE not 5G

@SteveCurler

All you need to do is turn roaming on and connect to the T-Mobile or AT&T network

if your phone is VoLTE enabled, calling will not be an issue.

Otherwise you might need to switch down to 2G for talking purposes
