With the shut down of 3G, has anyone tried the US roaming add on recently?
Will it work if your phone is capable of 4G and 5G?

Meow: The S7 did come with volte. Samsung does things a little differently. Not all codes work for all phones.
Install VoLTE Check app and disregard the entry result. Tap click to know below. Swipe over to Process 2. Tap open phone information. You can set more specific preferred network types here as well. But my phone shows grayed options.
I don't know if that flag would be there if the phone doesn't have the ability. Both of my Androids have volte and both are gray.

Samsung S7
I tried that *#*etc but first I got 'USSD code running' and then after a few minutes 'Connection problem or invalid MMI code'
Well, I will worry about VoLTE when time comes.
Thank you guys!

Its amazing what a little curiosity will yield.....voLTE has to be enabled by the provider but now I know where to look in the bf's Sonim XP-8 to determine once and for all what telus had enabled in the phone and explain why he could use wifi calling.
Dial *#*#4636#*#* on the dialer app. In case you see “Turn on VOLTE Provision Flag”, just turn it on in the same menu.
Quite the eye opening settings in there....google indeed is your friend.

For this VoLTE thing, would we need to change phones or get new SIM cards and it will be transparent to customers?
HI @Meow If you have a recent phone, many can do VoLTE. Problem in Canada is that the carriers only allow selected phones to use VoLTE on their networks. But with US, I think as long as your phone is capable of VoLTE, you can use it
What kind of phone you have?

Meow: If a phone has no volte capability then obviously you would need to change phones if you wanted to use volte services somehow. If the phone has it then it needs to be selectable. Some are grayed out, so unselectable. Or simply not showing anywhere, so unselectable.
A provider can tell a phone to disable these kinds of features. That would mean they can enable them then. I don't know if that's in the sim or from the network.
Then for this topic the provider would need to include volte in roaming contracts.
I think I've read here of someone getting vowifi as a hold-over from a previous provider. It might be a fun experiment to get a plan from a provider offering vowifi and volte to enable those options and then try the Public sim to see if the features are still there. (volte won't work at Public but maybe the option would be visible)

3G is not fully shut down yet. AT&T said they would be a month ago. As mentioned, it still works in many places. T-Mobile says they will be shutting down in July. Likely both will take some time as we're seeing with AT&T. After that, we don't know what Public intends to do about it.

@smeltzem Here is the link to a review I did a couple of weeks ago. Everything worked fine. If you are in some other area with no 3G your service will not work as PM does not support VOLTE calling which would use the 4G/LTE network.

Edit: The data add ons will work regardless so you could always use a calling app like Textnow etc.

You should be ok if it is done now but if it's in the near future or beyond you may want to look for an alternative just in case you run into issues.

According to recent post, customers are still buying and using US add-ons so it looks like it still works in certain US areas. We have to wait to see what PM is going to do with this add-on...
