US/Canada plan - US partners and does it really use 2G calling?

Hi,

For the US/Canada plan which roaming partners does PM use in US? I have read in other posts that it is only t-mobile now.

I have also read on some posts here that it uses 2G for voice calls in the US. Is this true?

Any idea what will happen when t-mobile shuts down their 2g network in April 2024?

Thanks, Elliot

VoLTE absolutely works when roaming in the US for PM customers. I do it often. T-Mobile is the only roaming partner at the moment, so as long as there is TMobile coverage you should be good.

Only if you didn't have VoLTE at home would you need to try 2G for voice calls, simply because the US shut their 3G network down.

@elliotk1 there is VoLTE support in US roaming with T-Mobile now as long as the phone is VoLTEbcompatible with T-MOBILE

The PM agent over chat told me no voLTE support in US. I checked here because I thought you guys would know better. Thanks

with PM enabled our account with VoLTE, basically most of us can use VoLTE on T-Mobile network , as long as the phone is compatible there. So, it is the T-Mobile compatible list to check and most common phone are there

The whole point of scrambling to add VoLTE to PM was because the US coverage is insufficient without it. Wouldn't make much sense if it wasn't supported.

@elliotk1

I am surprise that an agent would tell you that T-Mobile doesn’t support VoLTE. Does that mean they only use 5G?

That is why I use TextNow SIM for free calling and texting on 4G/LTE and 5G when there is WiFi available. The SIM was only 99 cent when I got it.

What chat sales agent? If the device is volte enabled here then volte will work on T-Mobile roaming. We have seen many reports of people roaming with volte and working just fine. Never put full trust in a sales person. Don't even put full trust in a reply from support agents here. We, the customers here, know these things better than them all.

@elliotk1 - I cannot answer your question. But did you already submitted a ticket to public mobile customer support and they said that? Or, where was this 'chat sales agent' you mentioned from?

Volte is working in canada on my phone. I was told by one of the chat sales agents that V0LTE is not supported in US and that US calls are on t-mobile's 2g network. Is this true? If yes, I'm thinking of switching to freedom mobile who supports volte in US.

As mentioned above t-mobile's 2g network will be shutdown in US in April 2024.

Thanks, Elliot

We only know of T-Mobile.
If your phone has been enabled for volte then you wouldn't need 2G. If this place continues to refuse to enable devices that can in fact do volte then I guess after April 2024 then those devices won't be able to talk in the states. But text and data would continue to work on LTE.
