@Cate As long as you have an unlocked phone, you can buy a local sim when you land at most airports.
The easiest alternative would be to set yourself up with something like Fongo (VOIP app) then, before you leave Canada, forward your number to the Fongo number.
When you are at your destination you can either rely on wifi being available and/or get a local SIM and plan that has mobile data.

There is only US roaming. You would either have to purchase a local sim or use sim like Gigsky. Alternatively if you have wi-fi then you could use apps like Fongo, Whatsapp, Textnow, or Skype.

What country? If US then there are roaming add-ons available.
If not then Public Mobile has nothing for you.
I'll defer to other frequent travelers for their experiences with other services.

Unless you're just going to America,...there are no Public Mobile network options for travel to foreign lands.
If going to US, there's a 10 Day Us Roaming talk/text/data plan available for $20.
Try using something like TextNow if you're going to a foreign country.
PS..you can also just get a local sim card in the country you happen to be in.
