Do I need to purchase a new SIM card in Japan or may I use an eSIM

for short term use, consider using WhatsApp to stay in contact with other WhatsApp'ers back home. Another option is before going overseas, download free voip app such as TextNow, select a free Cdn number so others can call / text you for free. Both these options will use local wifi or separately purchased data.

You would need local temp SIM or get free voip app.

PM has no roaming service in Japan, you will need to use local data sim or travel eSIM to have data there
