Text messages are giving error 98 and marked as not sent, but recipient gets them anyway?

I recently changed phones after my old one died and ever since I swapped my SIM into the new phone (Google Pixel 6), I've been getting an error randomly when sending text messages. Immediately after hitting send (SMS), I get an error "can't send message with public mobile, error 98" (paraphrased). My messaging app (Google Messages) shows the message as not sent, and lets me retry sending - however the message recipient does actually get the message, and if I hit retry, then they get the message twice (after re-trying, the message is marked as sent on my end). This does not happen every time, but happens frequently. This was not a problem with my previous phone (Pixel 2).

I've tried cleaning and reinstalling my SIM card, restarting the phone as well as making sure the device is up to date. Any idea what might be causing this error? I was probably just going to order a new SIM card, but I want to make sure this isn't just going to happen again after I transfer everything to the new card. Thanks!

@Benbot

Can you fill us in on which thing on the list fixed your issue?

That's great, thank you! Fingers crossed things work out well for now.

I did try the airplane mode toggle, it didn't work for me unfortunately. My network connection seems pretty stable (high bars, etc). Good to know though, thank you!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've gone through and tried these fixes and the only one that seems like it might have worked is the option to set the preferred network type to 3G only. I will keep testing this weekend and if it doesn't come back then I'll mark this as the solution.

Previously I had that set to LTE, because my understanding was that Public mobile 3G service was throttled LTE and so LTE was the correct network type.

Will setting my network type to 3G only cause other network issues or slow down my data performance?

@Benbot

Some people on this forum are adamant sending SMS issues can't be fixed with 3G network settings. I'm not one of them. I'll let you decide for yourself.

On the other hand, 3G won't do harm to your data speed beside increasing latencies.

You may want to have a look at this article (among many on the web) about your issue:

Error 98 SMS termination denied - 100% Fixed Solution (gossipfunda.com)

@Benbot

My sister had the same issue with her new Pixel 6 with koodo. Have you tried toggling airplane mode on/off? You could just have a poor connection to the network.

Otherwise all of your services will work on the 3G network (pm's voice calls only work on the 3G network) your data speeds can reach 20mbps+ depending on network traffic so they can vary especially during the day.

@Benbot

Plans with 3G data may reach download speeds of up to 3 Mbps, with the coverage and reliability of the LTE network. Speed and signal strength may vary with your device, configuration, Internet traffic, environmental conditions, applicable network management and other factors.

@Benbot   in fact, you might get better speed on 3G.. speed on 3G is unthrottled and can go up to 12Mpbs... Throttled LTE speed is only 3Mpbs  (but you will get higher latency on 3G)

hopefully the 3G workaround is just for short.  Carriers are upgrading their network to 5G and during tis upgrade, ppl might need to connect to 3G only until the work is completed.

@Benbot  - perhaps this is just a glitch in the app.

Try uninstalling Google Messages completely. Then REINSTALL it.

Test.
