Hello,
My son is in the armed forces and being deployed overseas soon. Does PM over a temporary suspension of service for armed service members for a nominal fee? He would like to resume his service and # upon his return.
Thanks!

Another option is to port his number to an app like Fongo where if he brings a phone with him and has the Fongo app on his phone, he can use the app on WiFi and keep his number. And then when he returns, he can port back to Public Mobile. Only caveat I can think of is he'll have to use the phone/app once say every two weeks to keep it active. Fong is a free calling app but there is a fee for texting. Or there is free Fongo to Fongo texting. So if you get the Fongo app on your phone, you can text each other free. Now I understand his phone can't be on 24 7 due to being overseas however, turning the phone on when needed, it could be an option. You can also reach out to Fongo for porting questions.
But OP’s son may want to keep his “plan”.

PM does Not provide any benefits for military, politicians, celebrities, retired, etc. people.
If you want to keep your number, suspend your account and around 85th day of suspension pay for next month; then again let it be suspended and repeat.
If accounts shows lower cost plan, change to it.
Depending how long absence from Canada is supposed to be maybe easiest way will be to just to keep paying every 30 days (unless he has very expensive plan).

@GriffyR1972 Thank your son for his service.
the closest thing to what you’re looking for is to toggle off the subscription- which turns off the autopay feature. You can do this for 90 days before the account is considered “closed”, so it has been recommended to disable autopay for approx 85-86 days and then reinstate it for 1 cycle (1, paid - 30 day plan) and you can then disable again. During the entire period, this will keep his account open, and his phone number in place until service is resumed. Hope this helps you (or others)
