When switching to PM from another provider, we can keep our old number by PORTING, correct? and this gets done when activating or after? Can I just use my existing sim card from my current phone that is unlocked or do I have to purchase a sim card from PM?

you need a new PM sim to activate your new PM account. I suggest you take a new number and when things are working as expected, you can initaite port of his old number. Make sure you don't cancel old number until port was successful.

You can keep your existing number from your current provider, BUT you will need a new physical SIM or esim from PM. If eSim is your preferred method, you can download the PM APP and start the process now, or buy a physical sim from Amazon ($4.99) and start the process once you have that in hand. Hope this helps
