For the $55/mo 20GB student plan is there any documentation needed to get/keep the plan? Or is it like any other plan and anyone theoretically could switch to it?

I think you meant to say it's $55 per 30 days? All referral codes will garner the new customer the promotional $25 credit. Only current customers who use their referral code more than once during this promotion will be limited to one $25 bonus credit.
If you use a referral code when you activated it qualifies you for the regular $10 bonus referral credit along with the current promotion of an extra $25 paid out in $5×5 month increments.
If you did not use a referral code and you need one feel free to private message any community member you like and ask them to be your friend. If they agreed to be your friend you can ask them for the referral code. They will be happy to oblige. Unsolicited referral codes are against the rules and should not be used rather they should be reported.

As others say.....no qualifications.....join if you like......it will always be $55 per 30 days. .
Like another says.....$55 for a limited time is incorrect!
See here and read the details.
The extra points are for a limited time. So is the better deal for a year or less. And you can always move to another plan if you like, anytime. Get a referral for a on-time $10 off and some referral codes will get you another $5 off for 5 months. Now the time.

The only limit to this plan is it's a limited time plan offering. Which means it could expire at any time. Then you would not be able to switch to it afterwards. However if you schedule a change plan on next renewal to the student plan and before your renewal and public mobile pulls this limited time offering they will still honor any plan changes that have been scheduled to occur on your next renewal.
So you may want to schedule the change plan on next renewal to the student plan. Then if you change your mind you can cancel the schedule plan change at any time up until 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern on day 30 of your cycle. Once you renew and if the plan is still on offer you can reschedule a change plan on next renewal to the student plan to keep that option open to you so that you won't lose the opportunity to change to it.
Public mobile in the recent past does not offer any heads up of when they will pull a limited time plan so you may want to keep a scheduled change plan to the student plan in your account just in case it gets pulled without notice.
