How long do I have to port over my old number after signing up for a line with Public Mobile? Asking because my old contract ends in a month but there's a promotion running and I might be interested in getting it.

If there's a promotion with Public Mobile that you want download the app and order the plan and sim card and pay*. Once paid for Public Mobile must honour the promotion/plan when you activate the sim card (anytime after you recieve it in the mail.)
*Don't forget to enter your referral code for the $10 bonus referral credit and any current promocode (like the 50% off your first 3 months promocode) on the payment page.
Once you have the sim card in hand and are ready to activate** my preference is to activate with a temporary phone # in case you have any activation issues. When all of your services are up and running and you can log into your self serve account port in your phone # on your profile page.
**Update the PM app or uninstall and reinstall it before proceeding with your Sim card activation to avoid any glitches or error codes.
You will need your full name, your account # and your phone #. Reply YES to the porting authorization text from your current provider within 90 minutes of recieving it. Power off your phone, remove your old Sim card and insert the Public Mobile sim card and reboot. Most ported phone numbers only take a few minutes to maybe a half hour to complete. Any longer than 2 hours and/or the inability to recieve incoming calling indicates an issue with the port (come here and ask for the porting department phone # to resolve an incomplete port.) Your old account will close and old Sim card will cease functioning once the port is complete.
Nearly all contracts with a device subsidy are postpaid accounts. This means your plan service will be prorated based in the amount of days of service used in your billing month. There is no penalty for porting out (or ending) your plan services early however the device subsidy portion of your bill must have all 24 months paid in full to avoid the ECF (early cancelation fee). As long as you port out in your last (24th) month of your contract your device subsidy will also be prorated and the proration amount will be considered an entire billing month as paid in full.
Example: Your entire bill is $90+tax. $60 is your plan services an $30 is your device subsidy. You port out on the second day of your last billing month of your 24 month contract. Your bill will be prorated and you will be charged $60÷30 days=$2/day×2 days=$4 for your plan services and $30÷30 days=$1/day×2 days=$2 for your device subsidy. $4+$2=$6+tax for your 24th and final month of your contract paid in full (+any extra charges not included in your plan like long distance or roaming).
Porting out a few days into your final month in this example saves you $28 out of the full $30 monthly device subsidy that by law (WCC) is considered paid in full once any portion of a billing month's device subsidy is paid. This only works in the final month of the contract to avoid the ECF.

Are you planning to activate a physical SIM or eSIM?
If you are activating physical SIM card, during the activation process, you can purchase the physical SIM card directly from PM site and it usually takes 1-2 weeks to arrive to your home. You will pay for the first month of your PM plan while waiting for the SIM card to arrive. Your plan will not start until you receive your physical SIM card and activate it. You can wait several weeks to start your new PM plan.
Otherwise, you could activate immediately a PM account with a temporary number. Then you could wait until your contract ends and then transfer your old number to PM. You will need to pay for both plans for a short period of time.

You can port your number over any time, that's if it's allowed. Before you think of porting over, confirm your number can be ported.

If it is, then I'd suggest getting the plan a day or two before the offer expires and then, and I'm guessing here, since you're in contract, what may happen is you MAY have to pay for another month of service over there but hopefully it's pro-rated which you should call them and find out. If it's not, then tell them you want to be moved to the lowest cost plan they have once the contract is up so you won't lose too much. Then port over the number when you're ready.

@BriceC there no real time limit , when your ready download the app to activate PM sim once you make payment at step 6 you will be given the opportunity to transfer the number to PM , just remember to leave your current provider sim / account active and in the photo reply YES to the confirmation text to port to public mobile . Once you have successfully ported the number to PM it will automatically close your old providers account for you .
