hi @Amanda84
Since it is a new phone, you have a chance to check if the phone is clean?

Network "not available"

It sounds like your new iPhone 6S might be locked by another carrier other than Telus or Koodo.
The December 2017 date is specific only to Canada carriers. There could still be carriers elsewhere that network lock devices. Also, even in Canada some devices sold after December 1, 2017 could still be locked. Canadian carriers did have to get them unlock for the customer though. There were even some devices sold at retail (and not linked to any carrier) that were locked after this date due to a Samsung software custimization processs. While it's no longer done during that process by Samsung for current models in Canada, there was a time that this process would lock the phone to the carrier of the first inserted SIM card. Samsung would unlock it upon request, but the point is that even after December 2017 (or even one purchased after that date), it's fully possible to have a phone in Canada that is still locked.

The only way to check is to go to Settings>General>About>scroll down to Carrier Lock and it should indicate No SIM Restrictions for an unlocked phone.
But if it show the name of a carrier then that carrier locked the iPhone and you need to contact them to have it unlocked for free or you can go to a cell repair shop to have it unlocked for a fee.
BTW, if the old SIM was in the water. Just dry it out and make sure the copper contacts are no scratched. Wipe it with a microfibre cloth and give it a try.

Try putting that SIM card into a different phone and see if it works.

Settings - Cellular - Network Selection - turn off Automatic and pick Public Mobile. Then reboot. If that doesn't work, pretty sure the SIM is hooped. Another thing you can try... put that SIM card into a different phone and see if it works. If it doesn't, then there is your answer. SIM is damaged.

This is what I’ve done, put SIM in, turn on.
pop up shows “activation required”
click “dismiss”
screen “allo”
enter passcode
software update complete
- continue
SIM not supported
I cannot get into the phone when I put the sIm in
but without the sim in I have access to the entire phone

Yes. You can pick up a SIM card from a local Telus store for $10 but call first. Or if you have Amazon you can get it for $4.99.
EDIT: Sorry forgot to add.... yes. Once you get a new SIM if it is indeed needed, you just go into your or his account profile and change the SIM number. You'll have to reboot after it's done.

Where do I find network settings?

It is quite possible it did get wet, in the incident. the camera on the paperweight phone was water logged so if the water causes issue with the sim than I’ll try a new one
Lol - it’s my teens phone - yes, new to placing phone in the back pocket. So it fell in the toilet!!
it lasted her since 2020 without a scratch - I’m not even mad lol
can we transfer the phone number with the sim?

Did your SIM get water damage? You may need a new SIM card.
"it went swimming" code for you dropped it in the toilet? LOL
Another option, go to settings, network settings and remove automatic, pick public mobile and reboot. If that doesn't work, I think your SIM may be damaged.
