I've been notified that a number of calls have been made with my phone number without my knowledge. Is there a way to secure my phone number without cancelling it?

Check your phone usage - calls in/out trough your self-serving account.
Most likely nobody hacked your account/SIM/phone but by accident your number is randomly generated when spammers call other people.
There is no way to secure your number from spammers to use it.
If you want, you can change your PM number 4 times within 30 days but it will not guarantee new number will not appear on other people phone when spammers continue doing whatever they do... 😞
Once I got a call from Alberta, older lady asking why I called her... spammers spoofed my number; nothing we can do about.

HI @KDWoodrow
nothing much you can do. CRTC has asked carriers to do something to combat with it . But it is more for the receiving end to filter out those calls (hopefully if less people answer the calls, they will stop spoofing). But this thing only works on selected new phones. So, it could be years before most phones can take advantage of it

this is Caller ID spoofing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing )
Honest, there is nothing much you can do. It is just scammers way of fooling people thinking it is a normal number calling (not those annoying 1-800 telemarketers) and will pickup the phone. The target is not really you (the number they spoofed). And honest, it has no harm to you. You cannot really do much, just like letter mail, people can randomly put in any address as the return address and you cannot stop it.
