When I activated my plan yesterday, the system would not accept my address or city. I thought I had to choose the closest so I chose Gander, Newfoundland. That is long distance from me. I just spoke with a couple of people who have public mobile and they both have local numbers and did not have to choose Gander. How do I get a local number?

@Magwumps "just spoke with a couple of people who have public mobile and they both have local numbers and did not have to choose Gander"
Yes, this in quite possible. In most areas PM seems to offer only the most recent area codes; for example where I live it's 647 although 905 & 416 are preferred.
The reason your friends have those numbers is either:

HI @Magwumps Gander is just a city close to you? Which exact city you are at? Maybe I can help to locate the city you should pick for you
Or do you have a cell phone number? can you port that number into PM?

This site will help you figure out which phone numbers available to you in your change number feature in your self serve account will be local calls for your contacts that do not have Canada wide calling plans as you do. So consider if your contacts can call you as a local call vs you calling them because all of your calls whether across the street or across the country are all treated the same at public mobile.
Change calling areas back and forth to refresh the phone number choices given to you in the change number feature. As mentioned you can change your number up to 4 times every 30 days.

@Magwumps - you can change your phone number 4 times every 30 days if you wish.
Go to Change Number in your Self Serve account, under the My Profile section, and see what numbers are available now, you can backup to keep refreshing the numbers and or cities before you choose one.

@Magwumps : Nevermind. You're trying to go from where you are. How about what is the prefix of that friend with Public Mobile? Do you not see any of these prefixes in the list? 220 234 235 256 287 381 422 424 431 571 651 And what about Benton?
Edit: I find these right off the top:

Which city is it? Carriers don't have numbers available for every city.
