Is Public Mobile going out of business soon?

Quest
Model Citizen / Citoyen Modèle

I started this topic because so many users while switching to Koodo or considering switch to Koodo are bombarded with false, I believe, information that Public Mobile soon is going out of business. Coming from the past experience when there was transition between PM with kiosks to PM exclusively online, it is important that some officials from PM can assure us and put their reputation at stake that it is not going to happen.

I know nothing is one hundred percent sure in this world so it may or it may not happen but I remember two stories, initiated mostly by store clerks, circulating around at the time of transition, and one of them sounds familiar to me:

Public Mobile is going out of business

• of course, didn't go out of business
• became online service based

Public Mobile here to stay with its kiosks open

• even to the last day I remember they were saying we are not going to close the stores and kiosks and they did

This assurance is very important because many user's decision to switch to koodo or not is based on fear that Public Mobile is going out of business. It should be based purely on individual preferences and benefits they think they can get. from that switch.

order a new PM sim, using a different email address, then when it arrives, complete the activation.  Once all working, port your number from Koodo over to PM.

Hello @Catty

Please follow @stonechucker's suggestion that's exactly what you need to do.

let us know if you need help!

Thanks,

* Please do not post private info such as: phone number, account number, pin etc.. This is a public forum.

You will need a new SIM card, but yes, activating a new SIM, sign up for a new plan (you will not find your old one), and port in your telephone number.

Please note, coming from Koodo, you will need a second email address to make this work - it's a back end issue.

Just re-port back? (sounds too easy)... @Catty

Since no longer a legacy user just re-port (I have no idea if the same PM sim card can be used, should be). Koodo cannot do it, PM has to... ps no such call center to call (that was only for legacy but no more legacy). Sign up via website.

I have been a Public Mobile customer since the birth of Public Mobile, about two months ago, I received a text from Public (or was that a fraudulent text) to Switch to it's pardner Koodo, at the time I assumed that Public was taken over by Koodo and therefore switched to Koodo.

Minutes after my activation, I realized that Public was still in business, and immediately asked Koodo to switch we back to public and was told, that they could not, I called Public and the voice message indicated that this was a service for Public Mobile customers only.

I would like to switch back to Public, and maintain my phone number since it is also my business number. What do I do?

@Quest I see that you have already posted several times in the thread directly related to the changes for Legacy Customers.

I hope you are able to alleviate your concerns.

@Quest the following is quoted from your response:

"...I am about to be convinced that we Legacy Customers should be quiet take graciously offer. No questions asked."

Your note has nothing to do with PM going out of business, it does however show that what you are actually trying to do is highlight the Legacy plan changes that PM recently announced. Issuing a #FakeNews thread about PM going out of business by referring to remarks from years ago is a waste of everyone's time.

If you are unhappy about being a Legacy Customer who has been affected by the recent announcement by PM (rate changes + Koodo offer) - then post about that topic, or use the existing thread(s) about the same.

So, nice play, you've obviously have been watching a ton of CNN. You'll get better results if you simply stick to what's irking you, not quoting rumors from years ago, and not pretending to know how many of PM's customers have moved to Koodo.

Last few points:

  1. To everyone: I am not trying to hold you back from sharing your thoughts, if fact please do share! Share share share! Just don't take the approach that was used to start this thread.
  2. Sorry if I've offended any community members but you offer your assistance with little in return - #FakeNews threads like this one show a lack of appreciation for your efforts.
  3. @Quest I hope you continue to share your actual concern(s) so that the community and PM might be able to help.

Happy Tuesday Everyone - keep safe if you are dealing with a snow-storm today.

@TheOldVR First of all I am relatively new to this forum. I don't watch CNN and I don't have even cable. In fact I don't watch TV almost at all. Since I'm new here I don't know even some posts you are talking about. Please look at my other posts related to this topic. I tried honestly to explain why I started this topic.

And by the way, this is my first time I'm on any forum and who knows maybe last time.

So, I’ll explain here why I decided to post such a topic. It started with my son. He decided to switch to Koodo. I am by nature cautious and like to be well informed before making any choices so I decided to help him to investigate situation a little bit deeper before switching. In a process of doing so I encountered many sales people inventing such unbelievable stories about future of Public Mobile yet pretending that they don’t know anything about call forwarding and data add-on. I said to myself that must be stopped. And I encountered some people taking this to heart so much that they decided to switch to another provider.

Just like how any rep at BestBuy trying to sell a laptop which he doesn't know anything about and just reads the tag with biases. All that for some commission. I think that is what happening here. There are some honest employees but in contrast there are some who will do or say whatever to earn something in return when they get a chance. You might have heard about TD bank forcing employees to do unwanted things for a little profit.

@NDesai Absolutely agree with you.

What legacy plan are you on?  It has been worked out all of the current plans are a better deal then the legacy plans unless you are on the $25 now $28 plan.

I am on $25 but don't use data a lot this add-on 1G for $30 suits me perfectly. Even with their $2 per 250M Koodo cannot beat it. I am still weighing pros and cons and honestly I don't care about this hike anymore. My son with my help but his own decission has switched already.

You put a question out there in the discussion forum based on rumours.. which is perfetly fine.  You are bound to get responses.. it sounds like you disagree with the responses (?).

People are simply saying that there is no reason to think that PM is going out of business. November promo which ended just under 3 months ago was a HUGE success and possibly fetched PM  tens of thousands of new customers (PM is rumoured to have gained 100k+ new customers in 2016).  There has not been any anouncement in the official "Announcement" section about going out of business.

You have a right to ask questions and seek clarifications.  I believe you have been active already exercising this right freely as I got a lot of notifications from the Koodo migration thread over the last few weeks.  🙂

Best of luck on making the decision that works best for you with regards to the options you have as a legacy customer.  Cheers.

Maybe it is not a good comparison but imagine that pharmaceutical company came up with new product or a medication and instead of labeling it themselves they give the right to every store to label it whatever way they want. One would say it’s for cancer treatment, another it is for a common cold and at the end they would say but hurry up it may be discontinued after few months and no consequences and responsibilities for doing so.

When I talk on this forum about PM vs Users I try to be fair and balanced.

I always thought that in order to stop rumors and conspiracies the best way is to make some form of statement that put end to that.

On the other hand, I’ve lost faith long time ago in any corporation and I am not naïve to believe they would come up with such a statement but I think that would be in their own interest and ours.

Actually, it is not about me. It is about others that I care and try to help on this forum or at some shopping center.

And it is not true that I disagree with everyone regarding this topic.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no question as to PM's intentions:  they intend to continue business.  In addition to the relatively recent promo, they spent a lot of effort revamping the community website.  Why would they do that if planning to close?  That would be like renovating a building just before its demolition.

As for the Legacy plans, the CRTC ruling that protected those plans expired long ago, so at some point, I see PM unilaterally shutting down the call centre whether there are any customers still using it or not.  For those customers, better to get the best terms while they still can, before there aren't any options left.  Switching to Koodo does not foreclose the option of coming back to PM later if another promo appears.

I have never seen a thread like this one in this forum.  Granted, I have only been here for a few months.  Public Mobile will not comment one way or another on what their future will be.  There is no point in asking them to confirm or deny anything.

That said, the best way to prove this business model is in it for the long haul is to have 2016 fall promo part II soon.  I got flamed a bit for suggesting readiness for another fiasco, but that would settle all intentions of where the business is going.

As for the legacy customers, if I were one, I would take the hint and move to Koodo.  It is a lot better to move under the terms offered rather than face the uncertainty of losing the call center and possibly the grandfathered plans.  The price increase coming up is warning enough that it won't be business as usual for the legacy customers.  Just remember, Public Mobile has the right to continue to alter the terms of service as they see fit.

I agree, that should have been an option.  But someone mentioning it does not equal PM offering it and has no bearing on whether PM plans to go out of business.

PM is actively trying to wean users off from legacy plans because they want to shut down the call centre and truly become an online support only carrier. Nothing more than that. If PM were planning to go out of business, they wouldn't have had the crazy Fall Promo that probably siphoned off customers from Telus and Koodo, as well as from other providers. The owner, Telus, would not have done that to itself.

Did I mentioned here that anyone is forced to switch? When I say assure us I mean by that to simply say we are getting false information after all in some stores they don't know about $250 MB add-on at all.

Regarding my topic. The beauty of this forum is that if someone not doing something to offend others and treat everybody with respect you have right to dislike it.

Public Mobile assured you will get the exact same plan. This is available and offered to everyone. As for that 250 mb add-on, it could be store region based from koodo. How public mobile suppose to let everyone know about the extra add-on which can be available at some region. Koodo is known to offer region based offers such Manitoba promo plans. As long as you are getting exactly you had on public mobile, discussing other offers here are not appropriate and misleading.

I highly doubt PM is going out of business. As amazing as it is, there is still so much upside with this model.  It will be a model that others wish they had done.  Hope PM can move quickly with another promo, and option to buy more data at cheaper price.   The cell phone companies in the USA are going unlimited with data (22GB cap).  Only way any Canadian carrier could possibly do it would be PM because of the model.  Very little over head.

I find these requests for a representative to confirm a company isn't going out of business usually redundant. No company is going to say "hey, we're 50/50 if we're staying open"

That would only make things much, much worse.

For what it's worth, I don't think we have to worry about it.
