If I get a plan now, can i wait to transfer external phone number for a couple months?

Just make sure to keep old plan paid up and in good standing. If it happens to get closed down, you'd have a hard time getting your old number transferred to PM.

you certainly can.

Just get a new phone number first and you can request porting anytime. 

When you are ready,  just llogin my account and go to profile page and click transfer phone number
