Data Usage

Hi,

I've been looking at my data usage/history for the first time and have a couple of questions.  First, does my data usage for the month get reset on the first day of the month, or the day my monthly payment is made, the 18th of the month?  Secondly, I use very little data, it says I am at about 200MB according to Data Usage in my account, but when I look at my data history and add up the data used under the Data column, it only comes to about 10-15MB at most, even if I go back to Mar. 1.  What could explain this difference?

Not related to data usage, but while looking at data history, I saw about 20 incoming texts all at about the same time from a phone number I did not recognize.  When I checked my Recent Conversations in Messages in my phone for that date, I did not see any texts from that number.  What could explain that?

Thanks.

That's exactly what I do the odd time I'm forced to use my phone to reply here.

" I really don't like typing on touch keyboards."

you can always speak to your phone instead of typing 👍

Yes you can either verify her account and ask for your referral code to be added or she can create a community account and do it herself. How recently did you activate her account?

You will have to contact the moderators....

Yes, next renewal.  I took over the phone from my mother because she could not use a touch screen.  It's possible I initially signed her up on in late 2019, that sounds about right.

I did not use a promo or referral code when I signed up my wife.  Is there any way I can get that bonus retroactively?

@teeder44

Hopefully you scheduled that to change on your next renewal and didn't choose change plan "now". And....chose the canada-wide plan?

This would indicate your 1GB PROMO DATA was from the free gift from pm in August of 2019. A reminder for you to check in each December for the "more the merrier" free gifts from pm that you must add from your add ons page to recieve. In December 2019 we were offered a 1gb data add on and a 400 international calling minutes add on. In December 2020 we were offered a 2gb data add on and a 500 international calling minutes add on.

You used your referral code when you signed up your wife so she recieved the $10 bonus credit and you recieved your $1 monthly referral reward?

[Off-Topic]

That is the same reason that I am keeping my OLD Asus Transformer tablet with a detachable real keyboard.  It is running on a custom 4.4.4 KitKat ROM.  I use it every morning to read my online newspaper.

I do have autopay.  I just signed up my wife to public mobile's $25 plan and instead of 1GB promo, she got another 500MB per month for a total of 1GB, for enabling autopay.  All for $5 less then what I pay.  🙂

I just switched to the same $25 plan.

@Anonymous

I only have the tablets touch keyboard. This tablets keyboard is just set to basic as my battery issue with this tablet started to wreak havoc on the keyboards functionality. Thus I have the occasional spelling mistake (vs mistyping) and I can get lazy about capitalization of proper nouns. I do have a high degree of one finger typing skill!

 @teeder44 : As I said earlier, that 1GB is an add-on. It stays until consumed. It does not reset. It just steps back to let your plan data go first. When out of plan data then it's there for "overages".

You can use those prepaid "credit" card gift cards to satisfy autopay for the free 2 bucks. It can even have a zero balance if you're otherwise paying your plan which apparently you're doing.

Edit: sorry for all the repeating. This has been an excellent fluid thread with your active participation.

My plan only includes 500MB.  Can't remember but I guess I was giving the 1GB promo when I signed up several months ago.  So I guess have to figure out whether the 1GB promo resets every 30 days on the 18th along with my plan's 500MB.  I suspect not since there is no way I used 200MB of 1GB since Mar. 18.  Does the promo 1G ever reset?  Maybe its a one-time add-on like US minutes, once you use it up, its gone?  Then I guess it means I only use the 1GB promo if I go over the plan's 500MB?

@teeder44

I doubt the 1GB promo resets every cycle (unless that was part of a promotion for a limited time).   It's likely a one-time add on which doesn't expire until consumed.

[That is, unless you signed up under this deal (which is not likely the case unless you JUST activated a month or so ago), Lunar New Year Offer - Community (publicmobile.ca)]

Yup, you got it, any bonus or gifted data add-ons get consumed AFTER your plan's included data is consumed.

Sorry, we are typing at same time.  Got it.  The 1GB is a one-time add-on, doesn't reset, once its used up, its gone.  It gets used when I go over 500MB.  Thanks for everybody's help.  🙂

I swear my keyboard is not aligned correctly....sometimes I get complete jibberish. If I get too excited and hit post before proof reading thats what you get....and I still have to edit at least once.

The 1GB promo is tracked separately.  You may have received it as a promo when you signed up.

Your plan data is used first then the 1GB is used.  If you run out of data within 30 then the promo data kicks in.  The  1GB promo data will remain roll over to the next month until used up.

The line item, "1GB Promo" is a data allotment which ONLY get's consumed after your "500MB at 3G Speed" data is consumed for the current cycle.

That 203.301 / 1024 MB will stay at the 203.31 level until you've consumed your plan's available data within a current cycle.

 @darlicious : Puzzle solved. Right. I keep forgetting the autopay "bonus". Nice typos by the way 🙂

@teeder44

The 200mb is from your promo so that was usage over and above plan data from previous months.  You must have exceeded your plan data. The 12mb is your current usage for this months cycle. You should sign up for autopay so you can recieve the bonus 500mb that comes with autopay.

Edit:

@Anonymous  In regards to your comment the other day..... the autopay data bonus is only hard coded to the $15 plan as you can see here....

 @teeder44 : So it's a bit of a puzzler for me so far. The 1GB Promo bucket would be an add-on. You've consumed 200MB of it so far. When your plan renews, the plan data restarts and you would consume that again.

The puzzler is ... where's the rest of your plan data? Is it another 500MB? Is it a gig? If so it's gone. It would drop off this list when consumed. Then re-appear at renewal.

If your current term started on Mar 18 then you need to count up all the data details from then. In the self-serve...not your phone. But then the complication would be the delay for today.

Edit: wrong wrong wrong wrong

@teeder44

Your PLAN data is the LAST LINE, and it only shows 12.771 mb used.

The 2nd line is an ADDON (PROMO that was added to your account). That will stay like that until your PLAN DATA depletes, than IT will kick in. So you must have used this past cycles.

I am getting data usage number from Data Usage and Overview, they match, see screenshot below.  Another question would be, why is 1GB Promo and 500MB at 3GB Speed tracked separately?  Is 1GB Promo non-3GB?  For actual data used, I am going to Data History and looking at numbers under Data column and adding up roughly.  My current 30 days would have renewed on Mar. 18, so you would think numbers in screenshot would be for Mar. 18 to today, Mar. 29.  Even if I go back in data history to Mar. 1 and add up the numbers in the Data column, they come nowhere close to 200MB.  They could be 12.771 which is in 500MB at 3GB.  Is Promo 1GB something else maybe?

 @esjliv : That would be an explanation of how data might get consumed but the counter and usage details would show consumption however it got there.

 @teeder44 : It's also possible that you haven't yet seen all details in the usage details. The details can be somewhat delayed each day. But that overview page counter is almost immediate.

I was able to find the number for those texts by doing a search.  Just realized it must have been a big message that was broken up into smaller message since the time was the same.

Still would like to figure out why my current data usage says 200MB which does not match what I see in Data History.

@teeder44  - I had a past instance where I was suspect of the data usage. So I put in a ticket with the Moderators.

But alas, they were right. Turns out WIFI was disabled on my device and burned through some data.

if you feel this truly is off in your Overview compared to your detail usage, you can ask the Moderators about it.

@teeder44 Your Plan data gets RESET every time your plan renews.

  • Every 30 days OR
  • if you RENEW your plan Early OR
  • if your plan gets suspended then you REACTIVATE it.

NOTE: if you have data addons, those stay with you until all used up. The Plan data always gets used first before addons kick in.

Are you looking at the 200MB on your OVERVIEW tab in your Self Serve account? This would be most accurate to go by for consumed data.

You must search you data usage from the day your plan renewed, for accurate detail usage.

That is quite a spread in the difference, are you sure you did not miss something?

NOTE: if you do not see this line item it is all used up for this particular cycle.

Can you provide a screen shot of these entries (without person info. of course)? I was thinking this was people going to your voice mail...but if it is clearly a TEXT (SMS) in your detail usage, is it?

Just in case, Here are the list of Voicemail Access Numbers, is the number you are seeing any of these?

@teeder44

Re your two inquiries:

  1. To determine your data usage, you need to go back to the last time your plan renewed and count all the data consumption from that point to the next renewal.
  2. Regarding multiple texts within a short time frame - that is likely due to the fact that even though current devices can group a longer text into one conversation (so it's one seamless message), the record of that text under your provider's usage history will generally display it based on the limited characters for SMS, which is 160 characters.

 @teeder44 : The data bucket counter resets at your renewal. Plans here are 30 days...not monthly. So the renewal date floats up earlier and earlier.

Are you sure those texts were inbound? Phones will do some sync-ing with servers on occasion. Or just initially upon activation...not sure.
