To answer a simple question…

can anyone tell me why my phone (or how to prevent it from) switches to 5G even though I’m on a 4G plan?

Thank you. I found the solution as instructed below. I just had to choose the actual eSIM first before being able to change the settings of each. Thanks for your help!

I found it, thanks. Because I have 2 eSIMs, I have to go into each one separately to find that setting. Thanks so much for your help!!

I have the $23 4G 6GB plan.

Having a 4G plan does not prevent you from accessing the 5G network. Most phones will automatically select the strongest signal. So sometimes, my phone will show that it is on 5G, even though I only pay for 4G. My phone will access the 5G network, but the speed will be throttled to less than 100mbps. As long as it works, you can just leave it alone.

Some people with 5G phones with 5G plans will complain that they only get a 4G/ LTE signal. That is probably because their location is too far from the tower for them to pick up the 5G so it defaults to the longer range 4G/LTE.

In certain circumstances, there is an advantage to switch your preferred network settings from 5G to 4G/LTE.  5G maybe faster than 4G, but its range is much less. If your phone is at a certain distance from the tower where 5G starts to cut out, your phone will switch back and forth between 5G and 4G as it searches for the strongest signal. In that situation, you may experience temporary drops in signal during the switching. In those situations, customer agents have advised me to just switch the preferred Network setting to 4G/LTE only so that your phone locks on to the more stable signal with the longer range. This advice is the same even if you have a 5G phone and a 5G plan.

@CJLOnHere   My iPhone has a physical sim so that's different.  Try searching for Voice & Data in settings, it's a different path with esim but from looking on line that should be the same end point.  If that doesn't work then maybe someone else who has an iPhone with esim can help.

I have an iPhone 13, but don’t have those exact options in my settings. When I go to cellular data, I just see the option to switch between my personal and my business eSIMs.

@CJLOnHere  You're welcome.  What phone do you have?  On iPhone it would be Settings - Cellular - Cellular Data Options - Voice & Data.

I just found this online for Android (Pixel)  Settings > network & internet > sims > tap on your sim > change preferred network type to LTE

Awesome, thank you! Can you please gove me an idea of where this setting is and/or how to do that?

@CJLOnHere   Because the plans relate to the throttled speed rather than the network.  If you want to limit it to the 4G/LTE network you do that in the phone settings.
