Current Performance Status of US Add-Ons?

WRXFiles

We are headed to the US next week, and wondered if the issues of last summer have been solved (was something to do with 3G networks turning off and our cards not yet working on 4G?).

At that time, the data service was so spotty and slow as to be unusable for navigation and calls, though a LOT of data was chewed up.  PM was great about refunding our charges, but more to the point, we didn't have service, and wondered if anyone had more recent real world experience.

We'd like the convenience of being able to use a 10-day data pack on the drive down through the US, but if not will look int to other options.

Also, if the data doesn't work, will the phone (voice) packs work, or are they also affected?

Finally, do text messages still arrive even without an AddOn plan?

Texts still arrive without an add-on. Text and data add-ons should be fine. It's the talk part that is very problematic now. And only T-Mobile works. So set your phone to T-Mobile when you arrive. As always range and coverage are a factor in all cases.

Text and data work fine; it must have been the specific area you were in. Calls on the other hand, YMMV, but don't count on it working.

Good luck with US add-on. Better to use paper maps and call from phone booths (if there are any left) then to believe US add-ons will work.

To be honest, @WRXFiles , it's very much YMMV when it comes to US add-ons from here.

You may find yourself with more luck connecting to the T-Mobile network vs the AT&T, however it really varies based on user feedback on here.

I'd recommend purchasing a US SIM card for a 30-day prepaid plan from T-Mobile or Mint mobile and enjoy a vast amount of data and unlimited talk and text.   You're sure to get reliable service that way.

Text should be fine in USA, but talk service almost won't work. You can buy data add-on, then using Textnow app to make a call.
