Choppy Calls.

Yesterday I referred someone who lives on the outskirts of Vernon, British Columbia. This individual has 5 lines to switch, and instead of doing them all at once on the same day we've been doing one per day incase the Card issuers think he's being double/Triple charged and trys to stop it in the future, this way all the billing days are one day apart and this won't be an issue.. thankfully we've only done 2/5 lines so far before discovering this Uh-oh..

Yesterday we did the first line which was his Primary and Personal phone, today he called me back so I could walk him through Activation of #2 and the call was soo choppy that we had to switch to Facebook Messenger wifi Call.

Yesterday when he called me from that line it was still with Bell and had Wi-Fi Calling enabled which clearly made a difference, but now the Port is done and he's using Public Mobile where almost no one can properly hear him when he's at his home when it previously worked with Bell.

Before this individual switched, I had said the reception would be the same as he had currently with Bell and that nothing would change.. the reception is still the same, however the calling is not and I don't know exactly what to do.

I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max here, when I put my Koodo Pre-Paid SIM Card In it than Wi-Fi Calling Is an option under 'Phone' in settings, but as soon as I put one of my Public Mobile SIM Cards in, Wi-Fi calling dissapears and is no longer an option even though this is the same company.

The Public Mobile Coverage Map shows that his property is covered by 5G Reception and he appears to be in the middle of Telus and Bell towers when I look at the Towers in his area.

If Wi-Fi Calling isn't a simple feature included by Public Mobile, what would be the options for an individual like my Referral here who's already switched two lines to Public Mobile from Bell?

Will this Referral need to switch back to Bell, or would a Cell Phone Booster be a beneficial write off in a situation like this to fix the choppy calls? and if a Cell Phone Booster would work what would be the best one to get for full house coverage and 100-200feet outside in the yard?

(Even if a Cell Booster is $300-$400 to fix this, that would pay itself off in a matter of 3 months of this individual being with Public Mobile since his bill will be going from $450/month with Bell to $225/Monthly with Public Mobile. + if it doesn't work Amazon will take it as a return.)

This is a really tricky situation and I'm not sure how to go about it, I feel so bad and like it's my fault that this person cannot use regular phone calls at the moment since I could have checked in about Wi-Fi Calling first before switching them but I didn't know and it didn't even cross my mind.

Well, what's your best suggestion?

Even I noticed the calling difference in 5G/4G/3G
I was a little bit curious and I tried to change it from 5G to 4G, just to see the call difference and it was a little bit difference, considering that I was talking to someone who has a public mobile SIM or a Telus
and with public to public, it was HD+ calling, so it was super clear and when it changed from 5G to 4G, it had deteriorated a little bit even if I was outside and with 3G, there is a difference in the call quality between
5G and 3G
It depends on location and in certain locations, they might have 5G for this speed and the call quality is not good at all, but the 3G is quite strong and prevalent in that place, so I guess it's better to use which is the most preferable option

But I noticed there's a difference in the network as well, when it's in between 5G and 3G, where 3G gives you the most amount of network, but the call quality has deteriorated or it is what we feel, considering many of us have been using 4G for a quite long time and 5G has been improving its services in many places!

HI @jor123

from what I know, none of the tier 3 provider has Wifi calling.  If this is a must feature for you, check Koodo or Telus

@jor123 , I agree! A few of Us had made the request to have Public Mobile offer that option for its Customers but not sure they ever will! 😞

He only had 1 bar of LTE and got 3 bars with 3G. I'm sure VoLTE was working, but not very well hence why 3G connection will work better for this case.

HI @Priority

iPhone 8 should have VoLTE. But seems like some complain the VoLTE not as good as 3G.  Maybe depends on the  locatoin

Update: Calls are now working normally after adjusting the 'Cellular Data Options' and switching from LTE to 3G.

Here is what we did on his iPhone 8 > Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data > Swap from LTE to 3G > and that Solved the Choppy calls.

Thank you @maple_leaf for the suggestion of doing that, it worked very well!

The little Koodo kiosk in my local mall sells Public sims. Same with the Telus store in the same mall. Some day I'll have to walk in to a MobileKlinik and ask...again the same mall, although they seem to have bought out one of the little repair shops in town too.

HI @MetaMorpheusMob  @Priority

actually "The only Public Mobile Authorized Places in 2023 are Telus Corporate Stores and Mobile Klinik Locations," this might not be true either.

Telus and Koodo corporate stores and Mobile Klinik are authorized to sell sim card and maybe vouchers only and not authorized to do anything else (not activation or service support)

@MetaMorpheusMob Online Search Engines are incorrect. All those locations and places you shared used to be Public Mobile Authorized before the change to Self Serve/Online-Only was made back in 2021, however none of them are Authorized anymore and I've tried calling all these places in the past just to see if they sell SIM Cards and they all exclusively offer Koodo and Koodo only now.

I remember calling Vancity since the name is so memorable, they we're mind boggled and confused as to where I saw on their website that they still sell Public Mobile, I guess they still haven't updated it since my call.

The only Public Mobile Authorized Places in 2023 are Telus Corporate Stores and Mobile Klinik Locations, no where else.

@Community_QA_ I have no affiliation to Public Mobile aside from having Personal Accounts and making alot of Friend Referrals whome I assist with Activation, Port in, and Account Setup to make it easier for them.

Since I am not affiliated with Public Mobile and I'm a regular user just like you, I have no choice but to also use The Community for Support, Resources, and Solutions.

The only Authorized Public Mobile Locations are Telus Corporate Stores, and Mobile Klinik Locations that's exclusively it.

@computergeek541 Thank you for clarifying.

@MetaMorpheusMob unfortunately, no.

To clarify, the member Priority is not a Public Mobile salesperson.

I would forget this option. His bad reception is not going to be just limited to his own property.

@MetaMorpheusMob  good suggestion.  But I always tell my friends, if bad signal, why bother, just change to another one and try it out. Free to port

I would be very interested to know if his calls with Bell were actually using wifi calling rather than cell. If he were to turn off wifi on another phone still on Bell that also has wifi calling on that account and try to call would it be the same.
But no, no wifi calling here.
He's up in the hills above Vernon. There could easily be line of sight issues let alone direction of transmission beams from the towers.

@Priority , this is a good suggestion @dust2dust made! Ask him to turn off the wi-fi calling on the Bell phone to see if regular phone calls would be the same.

@Priority I remember your post in July that you posted asking if Public Mobile had wi-fi calling! I wish but sadly no 😞

Edit: Typos!

I understand. But what about if he turns off wifi and calls you? Would the call from Bell on cell be better or worse or the same as calling using wifi calling? Wifi calling is basically voip like TextNow. It's just nice in that it uses the normal phone number.

Not sure about VoLTE, let me check on that.

Would a Cell Booster be a guaranteed sucess in this case?

His other 3 lines are still on Bell with Wi-Fi Calling enabled and those aren't having the issues the two we've switched to Public already are.

When I call the ones he still has on Bell with Wi-Fi calling enabled it's crystal clear, however when he calls me from the Public lines or I call one of the Public lines it's choppy and he's always cutting out with those ones.

Yes, when he was with Bell he always had Wi-Fi Calling enabled, he told me this today while we we're switching the Second Line...

@Priority  So he was using wifi calling with bell when he was at home before I assume ? Otherwise I think your right it should be the same coverage

Hello @Priority , I had a postpaid Telus account before moving to Public. It's true, Telus offers wi-fi calling, and it did help sometimes when the signal was poor. As soon as I switched to Public, the wi-fi calling setting disappeared in network settings. It would seem Public is not offering this feature.
