I purchased 1 gb internet with my reward points 

I received the confirmation email and it shows on my profile that I have 1gb unused 

and yet I don’t have internet when I want to use phone data as usual

Make sure that you didn't unintentionally purchase US data by mistake if you're trying to use your phone in Canada.

make sure you reboot the phone, then make sure you didn't setup any data limit on the phone

Did you try rebooting your phone (turn it off, wait a bit, turn it on)?
If your account says you have 1GB data then it has to work. Most likely your phone has to catch up with web site to realize you have data.
