5G phones Vs 3G phones

Since PM is 3G, seems all new phones are overkill. Currently have a Pixel 3aXL which I'm considering upgrading.

Do new phones come in 3G?  If so what do you suggest.

@Anonymous

I'm afraid a quick Google search found no such store.

Do you mind providing their website?

A31 is around $300+tax now.  Not bad.

Samsung A line has been very reliable in the past year or two.  Lots of choices for different price range.

 @rossputin : I'm very happy with my Samsung A31 international version. 4 Bordens at the place I bought it in Richmond BC.

I'm sick of the usual limited choices here in Canada via Best buy, The source, etc.

Looking to replace my Pixel 3a XL with something budget $500 (tax inclusive).

The Galaxy A52 catches my eye but don't want a 5G since I won't be using that.

Looking forward to your suggestions.

No Need for 5G at the moment. Most carriers don't have good 5G coverage for at least 2 or 3 years if not more. By then you may have to get a new phone so 5G rn is a waste.

 @rossputin : A32 is basically just a series. There are various model numbers in each series. I have an A31. One reference shows 6 models. My model number is SM-A315F/DS. This can be found in About phone. While shopping for a phone, you need to look for the specific model # mentioned in the posting or if in store, on the box, maybe on the tag. Then you can look for that model for the specs.

This matters with international phones or some US carriers. If the phone is not sold in Canada you need to be sure. If it's sold in Canada then, as I mentioned, why would the retailer or manufacturer stock phones that aren't compatible with any Canadian carrier.

@Anonymous what question didn't I answer?

 @rossputin : I don't know why you bravo'd the post asking a question and then still haven't answered the question.

So I looked at a reference of all 5G models that that reference has and all will work here.

It's been a bit of a goose chase. I mentioned this thought in another 5G thread. Why would a manufacturer make a product with just 5G when most providers aren't fully ready for it? They wouldn't. The products will continue to be downward compatible. It's marketing spin to say they support 5G. But under their breath yeah yeah it works all the way down to 2G/GSM.

It's only a problem if the phone only supports down to CDMA which is no longer relevant in Canada.

Not surprise, we don't have enough population for different model.

Honest, unless price is significant, get the 5G.  If you keep the phone long enough, maybe you can use it on  5G network later.

 @rossputin : It's almost certain that it would work here but we can't know for sure until you post the full model number. Or which carrier it says it works with. Prefer model #.

Hi @hTideGnow

No, I do not see the 4G here.  That's why I'm asking.  I'm afraid I can't compare prices in Canada.

Here's a review of the two. Keep in mind an American review.

@rossputin  there are 2 models.. but do you see them selling in Canada?  How much is the price difference?

rossputin
Model Citizen / Citoyen Modèle

There's two models.  4G and 5G.

The 5G model will work on 2G/3G/4G/5G without issue.

No worry, if you are planning to buy, just get it.  If you keep it for couple years, maybe you will be using it on 5G network.

5G is just the newer model.  The previous edition does not have any 4G designation.

Darn,

I don't see the 4G available in Canada. I don't need the 5G (assuming more expensive).

Any suggestions?

 @darlicious : I spent less than 500 all in last September and I see it on easycellular.com website (where I bought it) now for 400. It's not flagship but nor is it a $75 el cheapo phone from Staples (which I also looked at).

@Anonymous

Going by this comparison your A31 has a pretty impressve camera ans assuming they have improved the night shot capabilities from my 2017 version then its good phone to purchase if you get it for the right price.

@rossputin

Here us a comparison of the two....the B&H offering is the NA variant released in May 2020 with Android 10 but the rest of the specs hold true but the price is for the intl. dual sim model. I can live with single sim to save almost $500.

 @rossputin : Battery seems fine I dunno. I don't care about the camera. Seems fine for what I need/do.

As far as battery and camera go, satisfied?

 @rossputin : Everybody has their wishes so I'm not recommending per se. I have the Samsung A31. I wanted dual-SIM. I wanted NFC. I wanted an sd card slot. I was already familiar with Samsung so I leaned that way. But I had looked at several flagship models like Asus and Sony.

I was a little disappointed that it doesn't flip in/out of mobile data automatically when it sees an mms like my prior S7 did. But really...I get so few of them that it hardly matters.

@Anonymous, what phone do you have/recommend?

 @rossputin : Which is why I prefer a phone with an sd card slot.

@darlicious , I have the Pixel 3a XL.

Great camera.  Battery is starting to wane.  Cracked screen.  Using Google Photos with some apps can be very frustrating (ie. Kinemaster) so wouldn't mind bigger local storage.

@gpixel

I'm impressed with google pixel 3/4 camera's capabilities ( you have the 4a?) so I was surprised the OP would consider other phones. Spec-wise the moto g7+ really does hold its ground even I was surprised when comparing with the google 3/4a. A little pricey though.....

@rossputin

I would either wait for the pixel 5a for budget or the pixel 6.

I think the 6 will finally have a new main shooter and a triple camera array setup

@totalUser

Umidigi phones do offer good value but if you are a photog you are going to be disappointed. My moto g7+ model # XT1965-T.  There are some side by side comparison shots with my Samsung A3 in my lounge thread "What's for dinner?" if that interests you.....and I am impressed with its low light capabilities and it has a whole host of camera features I haven't even gotten around to experimenting with yet. Anything I have posted in "Sunset to Sunrise" from mid-December forward would be from my moto phone.

@darlicious

Which model do you have?

There were issues with umidigi cameras my family member was furious about it but apparently that was software related and updates took care of it. I'll ask him to send me a nice pic  (yours is really beautiful i sent him him the link)
