5G network speed in Sudbury Ontario

SarahWei

I changed my plan from 20GB to 40GB yesterday and expecting faster network service but it is not. I discussed with a few experts and thank you again for your help. Please allow me to address this issue again today in a separate ticket.

I live in Greater Sudbury Ontario. I tested 5G wifi speed in two locations. The first picture was measurement result in my office near Sudbury downtown. 164Mbps down stream is pretty decent speed. The rest pictures were wifi speed results in my home located in an area called New Sudbury. I repeated speed measurements at home at night, in the morning , and in the afternoon. The results were consistently less than 2Mbps down stream!!!

Comparing 5G speed of two locations, it seems that there are potential technical issues in New Sudbury aren. New Sudbury is one of the popular regions in Greater Sudbury. Cambrian college is just across the street. Wifi service should be much better than a few Mbps at 5G or LTE.

please help. Thank you!

What happens if you force your phone onto the 4G network at home? You can still get better than 4G speeds on the 4G network. I personally don't use 5G on my phone (even though I have a 5G plan), because I find I get better signal and speed on the 4G network where I live. Your issue is highly likely a signal strength issue. 1 bar of service is not going to get you great speed for the most part.

Check this out. 5G plan, but 4G network speed test.

Move? 🙂 Do you know the neighbours around the building? Maybe go to each side of the building and see what you get. Do you have home internet service? Or is your phone it?

I would stick with either wifi when on wifi or cell data when on cell. But that's just me. 🙂

Thank you for reminding me. I will switch back to 20GB plan next term.

Thank you for reminding me that wifi and cellphone data are different terms. I used the word “wifi”  which is not accurate. I should use public Mobile cellular data speed.
Thank you for reminding me that the reception is poor. I am in the third floor of an apartment building. I tested again beside the window. Down stream is 18Mbps to 24Mbps.  Do you have any other idea to how to get better signal?

I am not talking about plan. I’m talking about data speed.

HI @SarahWei

so, your account should be good since it is getting 160+ in your office

try to Reset All network first at your home and see if it works well after

and please try the speed test in different area in Sudbury as well

of course, if your area still have slow internet, you need to let PM knows:

The first you have 3 bars on 5G. The next ones flip between LTE and 5G and just 1 bar. I would say your reception is poor which would explain the speed.
Please be sure to say wifi or something like cell data. They are not the same.

Public Mobile's plans aren't about the 5G network specifically.  The plans that are advertised as being 5G plans are set to higher possible maximum speeds. All plans have access to the same networks.  As you're getting poor speeds in a specific location, speeds would be poor regardless of the type of plan chosen.
