Does anybody know when Public Mobile is shutting down the 3G Network? And which devices will be affected?

@Yummy   Being VoLTE capable and being VoLTE enabled by a carrier are two different things.  I had a VoLTE capable phone with another carrier and it did not get VoLTE,  it's not just a Public Mobile thing although some other carriers have a larger whitelist.

PM's phone list is very limited and not complete. My S10 is VoLTE compatible based on zillion reviews and blogs I visited. Why I am NOT seeing VoLTE option in settings is beyond me. Do I care? Not really as long I can do SMS and occasional call.

Hi @Chalupa_Batman

Just to add, 4G and 5G phones always connects to 4G or 5G when automatic is set, hence you cannot tell the 3G calling unless you make the call

OK. Did some tests with my two phones based of all your responses.

First phone, when I turn WiFi off, set data on and make a call it switches - shows on the top bar - from LTE to 4G.
Second phone, same as above - but switches from LTE to H+. Does it mean it cannot handle - it is not compatible with 4G???

Mind you, I do not care of network data at all. Any data my phone uses is through WiFi.
Calls, I do not care much too as 99.99% of my phone use is SMS.

Maybe, just maybe if I ever port true land line to mobile, I might care for 3/4/5G calls. Currently since I still DID NOT get clear answer will ported true land line number on mobile device be able to receive SMS (2FA) I am keeping my land line and have mobile as emergency/grocery store communication device.

@Chalupa_Batman   The article says "The easiest way to tell which network your phone can support is to turn off Wi-Fi in an area with cellular coverage; the mobile network that kicks in—3G, 4G (LTE) or 5G—will display in the status bar at the top of your screen" but surely that's not quite enough.  You also have to make a phone call and see if the phone drops to 3G from LTE.  I have an Android that is an LTE phone and it shows LTE in the status bar when wifi is off and data is on, but drops to 3G on calls.

@Yummy it's not phones that can't handle anything above 3G, it's phones that need 3G for voice calls and can't use VoLTE.  The PM list of VoLTE phones is in my previous post.

I hope I do not have to buy new phone. They are not cheap... How can you find out which phones cannot handle anything above 3G????

@Bpage2024   The devices that will be affected will be those that are not capable of VoLTE (voice over LTE) because those phones need to drop to 3G on voice calls (which is why some people are having problems roaming in the US since there is no longer any 3G there).  Whether a particular phone is affected will depend to some extent on the carrier's whitelist as well as the phone's own capability.  Public Mobile's list is here although it's not being updated.

@Bpage2024 no confirm date yet

 Original belief was end of 2025, but industry insiders believe it will be postponed

There is no word yet. The US has gotten rid of there, Canada could be a few years ago way. They say until at least mid to end of 2025.
