I currently have this:
The new $ 15 plan is this:
I use my phone to text and do very basic emails. On a busy month, I might end up using 200MB of data.
At most, 30min of talking per month.
If I understand correctly, the new plan would cost $ 20 per month for 50 MB less? Did I miss something obvious? Did I just pull a Lando Calrissian and say "This deal is getting worse all the time"?

the 3G or 4G or 5G plan are just plan speed, it does not mean you have to only use the 3G network when you have a 3G plan, ie, you can access 4G or 5G with your current 3G plan, just that the speed is capped at 3Mbps
So, even with sunset of 3G, you should be able to keep your current $15 plan. And if you ask me, there is a chance they will up the speed of your "3G speed" plan at that time

Phil_Adelphus,
True, but my phone is future-proof; it's the plan I'm trying to optimize. When 3G goes away, users on 3G will be forced onto a 4G plan. And, (gasp!) it won't be $15! This way, I get a 4G plan for $15 until my permanent data bonuses run out. At that time, I'll have to look at all options.

@Terryscell The benefit is I now have a $15 4G plan, which should not be affected when 3G goes away
Unless your phone is only 3G capable or isn't VoLTE capable/enabled it will not be affected when 3G eventually shuts down in Canada. If your phone is only 3G and non-VoLTE it would, however, be affected in the USA where 3G shut down in 2022. PM's 3G plans were about 3G speed, not network.

As others have stated, you still have your "old" plan, which will be good until Public Mobile drops 3G. (2025?)
I switched, since I am also a *very* light data user, and have enough permanent bonus data to last me several years. Since both plans cost $15, it's not a downgrade, and I should not lose my recent loyalty bonus. But, I'm prepared to argue that if I do.
The benefit is I now have a $15 4G plan, which should not be affected when 3G goes away. And, when I eventually have to pay for data, $15 + $5 is probably no worse than whatever plan would replace the "old" $15 one.

@Jason4599 As others have noted, you're not going to be changed to the new $15 plan, you keep your existing one. I would agree you are better off buying minutes on the old plan if you need, and which don't expire, rather than an add on with such a small amount of data that expires on the new plan. But it may suit some people better to go with the new one.

@Jason4599 the plan you currently have is still your plan [unless pm descides to switch you to the new one] which they have not done yet. The would have to give you 30 days advanced notice.
I also have that plan with no intention of switching....

So long as people on the older $ 15 aren't forced to switch to the new one.
Like I said, for my personal usage, I don't see what the advantage would be in spending more money for less data. (3G vs 4G speeds for sending/receiving a basic email is not a thing)

Everybody is different and you cannot satisfy all customers.
I find this 'new' $15 plan perfect for those who need emergency phone and particularly now with unlimited calls in/out it becomes very attractive as customers do not have to worry they will be out of minutes.
BUT, your current $15 still has 100 min outgoing calls and 250MB of data. Plus you should have holiday bonuses (if you were customer las few years). NOBODY is forcing you to 'new' $15 nor will switch you. But it might happen in a future (like increasing plan from $10 to $13).
As for data, free WiFi is everywhere... I was never able to use all 250MB of data unless I WANTED to use it close to billing cycle just to use it. Even now 5GB of data is hard for me to use; unless I do some browsing in the morning before powering up Internet hardware.

HI @Jason4599
I wouldn't say it is worst, it is different. People now get unlimited calling instead of 250 Mb, just for different market. Those new subscribers who need data will get a much better deal at $21 (or $19) for 3GB
and for you if you are on the old $15 plan, it won't affect you anyway
