What kind of phone is it?

Any phone sold in Canada after December 2017 had to be sold unlocked.

And as mentioned....if locked.....ask seller to unlock for you.

Also I only buy used phones if the original box is included....it eliminates a lot of suspect stuff.

@aztec

I hope you purchased the phone from a trusted retailer and not from eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
If it is a Samsung phone, it maybe locked by Samsung Canada. If so, contact them at 1-800-726-7864.

In a case of a phone being locked to Bell, there wouldn't be any need or reason to check the device for compatibility after unlocking the phone.  All cell phones sold by Bell that have a SIM card slot are compatible with Public Mobile.  The network/network types are the same.

thank you, done that already. Good advice.

While you're at it,  @aztec check to ensure it's not blacklisted.

If it is, being locked to a carrier is a lesser concern.

@aztec

Ask the seller to unlock it for you....if they can't its a little suspect....?

@aztec it will work ONCE it is unlocked. Contact Bell/Virgin to unlock for you.

Public Mobile uses the following frequency bands:

  • 4G LTE and LTE Advanced: 700 MHz, 850 MHz (band 5), 1900 MHz (band 2) and 2100 MHz downlink and 1700 MHz uplink (AWS).
  • HSPA: 850 MHz, 1900 MHz (UMTS).

  • 3G or WCDMA 2 (1900 MHz ) and 5 (850 MHz) bands  makes the phone compatible, which is needed for phone calls, and can also be used for text messaging and data.
  • LTE can be used for text messaging and data.
