You will need to make sure your Data Roaming is enabled on your phone. Otherwise your phone will not work in the US. You will not incur any additional charges by turning roaming on.

No matter what you do, you won't be billed for something later on...no matter where you are. Public Mobile is a pre-paid service so you can only have access to something that you've paid for beforehand.
PM = Public Mobile
In the US, they;ve discontinued their 3G for calling. Now you'll need a volte enabled phone OR a phone that can use 2G for calls. What make / model is your cellphone..we can look it up to see if volte is enabled.

If you got US/Can plan NO charges will be incurred! That is the point of US/Can plan - to have unlimited services in both countries. Plus PM being pre-paid they cannot charge you more than you paid for.

you might hafta manually select T-Mobile or AT&T as preferred network. Reboot cellphone. Do you know if your cell is volte enabled by PM ?

Critical part to US roaming depends on T-Mobile/AT&T coverage and whether you can connect successfully onto either network.
If the phone is not connecting to T-Mobile/AT&T, change the Network Connection from Automatic to Manual and select and test both T-Mobile and AT&T and see which one you can connect.
If your issue is with data, make sure your Roaming Mobile data is enabled and you have disabled your mobile data limiter. Also change your network mode to 4G (and don't try 5G until you can connect and works on 4G)
If your issue is with voice, make sure VoLTE is enabled on the device setting. And if it does not work, try to change the Network to T-Mobile ONLY, and change Preferred Network Type or Network Mode to 2G and see if the calls go through.
Also, you can download VoIP app TextNow as a workaround to make calls and text if you have Wifi or if your roaming has data component and data is working
