iMessage saying "activation unsuccessful - turn on iMessage to try again" after successful set up

So, after finally having success with my number transfer I'm still having "activation unsuccessful - turn on iMessage to try again" when I try and turn my iMessage on and off.

I have turned both iMessage and Facetime off, turned my phone off, waited about five minutes and then turned back on. Still having no luck with getting it activated. I am still currently able to iMessage through my email, but it will not let me select my phone number. 

Does anyone have any advice on how to proceed?

As @hTideGnow stated wait 24 hours before try again when you do try again, uncheck the phone number or whichever method you have for using iMessage turn off iMessage and restart your phone after re-enabling everything  add back the number and try to see if that works.

I think too many activations this weekend  with all providers.  According to Apple, it could take as many as 24 hours for the verification.  Maybe just wait the 24 hours first.
