I know PM doesn't have roaming in Mexico.

I am ok with buying a local sim.  How do set things up so I can still recieve calls and texts to my PM number?

Is it even possible?

PM doesn't have roaming in Mexico, so it would be impossible to receive calls and texts to your PM number while you're in Mexico.

Wifi would work though. I have an iPhone and I use an e-sim called Airalo when I travel. It is available on the apple store. Then I would go to settings -> messages ->  under iMessage: select send and receive (choose use Apple ID for iMessage). This means all Facetime calls/voice, and iMessages would be sent and received using your Apple ID email.

@heynow999 You cannot use PM in Mexico. If you are going on a vacay to a resort, you will have Wi-Fi, and you will be fine. If you are going to places without Wi-Fi, then your only options are limited to:

1) Getting a local SIM: Your phone MUST support dual SIMs. You won't be able to use the PM number whilst in MX, but you will be able to use the MX one. Be aware that unless your phone is capable of two physical SIMs, if your phone currently has a physical SIM for your PM number, you can only get a local MX eSIM. If your PM is on an eSIM, then you can either get a local MX physical SIM or eSIM. Note that prepaid local eSIM, especially for data-only use whilst travelling, are not something frequent. You might find more physical SIMs for local prepaid data-only service. You might want to switch your PM to an eSIM before going to MX if you intend on buying a local physical SIM.

2) Getting an eSIM beforehand: Your phone MUST support dual SIMs. You won't be able to use the PM number whilst in MX, but you will be able to use the MX one. Whether you use a physical SIM or eSIM for your PM number, you can get an eSIM BEFORE going to MX. You can use services like SimOptions (https://www.simoptions.com/), Airalo (https://www.airalo.com/) or Holafly (https://esim.holafly.com/). You pick a plan, activate it, and use it as soon as you land.

Please refer to your phone's manufacturer manual on how to use your dual SIM.

iMessage or RCS can work but that's dependent on the sender's device, messaging app, and settings. Same for the receiver.

Overall you can forward calls, but you cannot forward text messages. If that's important you'll need to use a different carrier or number.

If both sender and receiver of the text use RCS (Rich Communication Services) option in your messages app, you should be able to get the text to your Public Mobile # via WIFI or DATA connection to the internet.

To my knowledge, that will only work if the the other person who is in communciation with also has RCS enabled.

If both sender and receiver of the text use RCS (Rich Communication Services option in your messages app), you should be able to get the text to your Public Mobile # via WIFI or DATA connection to the internet.

For voice calls , you could record a message saying to send a text.

@heynow999 : What you mean by text is probably SMS messages? If that's so the only way to receive them is probably to keep the phone plugged in Canada while you are away and forward those SMS messages to the number in Mexico. There are lots of apps that can do this but I haven't tried so you have to test them out or maybe some other members could suggest something they've tried; https://www.familyorbit.com/blog/automatically-forward-text-messages/

But again best alternative is to use something like Signal (https://www.signal.org/) or Whatsapp and let people know to contact you that way. This would ensure that the messages are reliably sent and received.

Replying to my own question..

I should be more clear.  I have some rental units.  I need to be able to be reached pretty much 24/7 in case of emergency.  Most people text me these days.  It would be best if I could somehow recieve texts from my PM number while I am in Mexico

Another solution that you can do is buy a VOIP canadian number like Fongo (https://www.fongo.com/) which can be use in mexico and then forward your PM number to that. But then when you leave you need to keep your PM phone plugged in and charged at all times within Canada so that it can forward the calls to your Fongo number. But this kinda solution is error prone I believe and I haven't done this myself and personally won't rely on that. The solution I've used is always having a out of town voice message so that users can call me at my Mexican number if needed. This has worked for me always. 🙂

You can use Whatsapp to call , video chat and text over WIFI or the DATA on your Mexican SIM card.

Or try the TextNow app. This ad supported app gives you a number to call and text to over WIFI or DATA.

@heynow999 : No that's not possible. The PM number will not work in mexico and that's pretty much it. What you can do (which I do most times when I travel) is to record a out of country message which you can do in PM voicemail settings. This will ensure that if you receive a call to your PM number, it will play that message. In that message you can say your Mexican number so that people know where to call you.
