I have been using my phone for talking only but data time is getting used every day, anywhere from 2 to 42 megs per day. Where are my megs going?

Are you on Android? The quick way is to use Data Usage in the setting menu. Set the Cycle start date to today (or yesterday), then you will see which app used the Mobile data
A long term solution I recommend is to install some data tracking app that does 30 days cycle and not just Monthly (as PM is running on 30 days cycle). You will set it up once with the cycle date, then you can tell which app used how much in each cycle and the total data consumed.
On Android: Data Witness PM, Data Counter Widget
On iOS: My Data Manager

@mikelukow : Your phone will use the internet for OS updates, app updates, app notifications etc. Go through all the apps and turn off background data usage for those you don't want to use data. Set OS and app updates to only happen when on wifi.
And yes...turn off cell data when not intending to use it.

You need to manage your data by the settings in your phone.
Example: For some applications I turn off background data.

Go in to your settings and turn OFF data until you need it.
