I'm trying to figure out what my options are while travelling in the USA. If I'm in the USA and someone calls my phone without having a roaming add-on, will there be any indication that someone tried to call me?
The 10 day roaming add-ons are a nice option, but a little pricey for longer trips.
Thanks for the help!

@mimmo wrote:@dna2016 once connected to the partner network (without a usa roaming addon) you can receive sms. you just cant send them.
my understanding was incoming calls would go straight to voicemail. but @Anonymous said they will go through. but that is the first time i have heard of this mentioned in the forum. outgoing calls will not go through.
I mentioned it back in January I think. But then hairbag1 said above that he did not receive calls so apparently YMMV.

@slugboy6000 as everyone on here has mentioned, unfortunately without the roaming add-on once you cross that boarder your phone is pretty much a dud. Any calls you receive will go straight to I believe an automated service indicating you can't receive calls, and also your texts won't get through either. Same goes for you trying to make calls and send texts, it won't work. Highly recommend you get the roaming package just to be safe.

You can also buy a sim through gigsky.com or zipsim.com which have different plans for various length of time.

Wow, thanks for the tips everyone, excellent info. That gives me a good starting point. I'm shopping around for myself and my dad who is a snowbird. It requires a little strategy when there are two homes on either side of the border and trying to keep everything simple and affordable. I've used Roam Mobility with some success, but with wifi availability in the future a VoIP service may be the way to go. I'm interested to find out what bugs are present in the system when I'm down there again. Great responses, cheers!

Sounds like there's limited options for you with Public Mobile. How long will you be in US ? You can buy multiple 10 day US Roaming Add-on while in US, if that helps....but cost is a factor.
I've had incoming-only texts while in US but never had any calls.
If you really want to have 24/7 access, check out Walmart for a US Talk/Text sim card.
Good luck and safe travels.

Among several quirks of this place, 2 of them are that you can receive calls and texts in the states without roaming add-ons. Not outgoing. The "bug" could get fixed at any time so don't rely on it but it worked for me when I was last in the states in January. iirc I saw the number of the caller.
Next time I'm going to see about fiddling with data but I doubt it.

One option I have done is forward cslls to a fongo.com account. That way you can retrieve voicemail and I believe call logs when on wifi.
Even if you buy a local US sim your friends will still be to call you on your Canadian number.

If you run a business then I definitely think you would need roaming as your phone wont' ring. You can still access your voicemail from another phone if you are desparate and you could use whatsapp with wifi with anyone that knows you are away.

@slugboy6000If you don't purchase the add-on you will still be able to receive texts not sure about incoming calls. So ask them to text you instead of calling. (Although some have mentioned they were also able to receive calls).
For outgoing calls or texts you need an add-on or use third party apps like hangouts dialer if Wi-Fi is avaialble.

@slugboy6000, you will not be receiving any phone calls or indications of a phone call if you don't purchase a roaming add-on.

Sorry, but call display will not work in this situation. Your phone won't ring.

@slugboy6000 If you don't have roaming add-on, you won't receive any call from Canada.
So how long your trip will be? You can think about buying Roam Mobility https://roammobility.com/ They have different plan as long as a month.
