Just activated a new account and put in the SIM card and powered up my phone and it asks for a SIM NETWORK UNLOCK PIN... how do I get that?

Must receive UNLOCK PUK code from the previous mobile carrier.

Some have mentioned the SIM Network Unlock PUK. This is not what you need. The SIM Network Unlock PIN and SIM Network Unlock PUK are not interchangeable. Make sure you get the right type of code.

@dawnzo Your phone might be locked to the previous provider. You must get the Network Unlock PUK code from your previous provider.
If your phone is a Samsung you might be able to get an unlock code from the Samsung website via a chat
To start a live chat session from Samsung's Contact Us page: http://www.samsung.com/ca/info/contactus.html?CID=AFL-hq-mul-0813-11000170.
Hope this helps!

You can get a PUK code directly from Samsung. Start a live chat session from Samsung's Contact Us page: http://www.samsung.com/ca/info/contactus.html?CID=AFL-hq-mul-0813-11000170 Inform the rep that you would like to unlock your Samsung phone and provide the IMEI & Carrier info In a few (2+) days, you will get the unlock code via email
