Unable to receive SMS after switching to Public Mobile?

elBez

Hello all,

I recently came to PM from Freedom and today realized that I was unable to receive 2 step verifications from several sites that I frequent (Amazon, Google, banking, etc.). I did all of my activation steps, swapping out the SIM, and so forth yesterday before dinner.

For what it is worth, I can make calls, receive texts, and am able to use data.

I have searched around and see similar issues but am not sure if any of these other issues match mine. I'm in eastern Ontario, maybe within 15k of the US border, in case that might cause issues? I have not myself visited the States recently, nor purchased any US Airtime minutes.

@elBez

Indeed verification texts will take 48-72 hours to be sent for security reasons. Welcome to public mobile.

@elBez  Cool.. again, regular incoming calls and text will start working soon.  But text from financial institutions  might start working later, as many as couple days (it is a protection they added as well as it takes time for them to learn your new provider).

@elBez good to hear things are progressing. When things complete your old sim should stop working and that will be confirmation the old carrier has completed the port-out.

Odd if you recall replying to the verification text previously - maybe it's not all your fault. 🙂 maybe you shutdown/pulled out the SIM before the confirmation text finished sending previously... 🤷‍

I retried the old SIM and all of the missing messages and verifications came rolling through. It's odd, because I did follow the Freedom button commands (typing "YES" etc.) but I guess something went wrong somewhere along the line. Once the old SIM was in, a mod was able to help me get everything in order. Now I'm just waiting for the number to be fully transferred before the final reboot.

What you've said is a good catch & to be honest, sounds the most plausible reason for what happened. User error strikes again?

@elBez you can further confirm an incomplete port by putting your previous carriers SIM back in the phone, and see if it still works.

Leave the old SIM in the phone until you hear from the moderators - they will retry the port which will send a verification text to the losing carrier SIM, which you need to reply to within 90 minutes.

Maybe you missed the verification text the first time by switching to the PM SIM too early.

Update: I checked around and realized that some phone numbers weren't working, but others were. I checked my voice mail and it went straight to my old provider, so I knew something was up. I opened a moderator ticket and it turns out that it didn't cleanly port over the old info from my previous provider. Whether system or user error, I'm not sure. Either way, I'll update once this is all fixed, so maybe someone else can learn from me!

Remove your phone’s battery - Some phones have removable batteries. Sometimes removing and reinserting the battery can fix certain issues. Just make sure your phone is off before you do this.

what is mean for Rebooting the phone means to turn off your phone and turn it back on again.

Please note that SMS does not use data, nor do the APN settings even have to be set.

Hello @elBez ,

Give it a few days after activating with Public Mobile to fully have the proper set up with these verification codes on your new number or ported line; I believe some are not functional instantaneously.

Short codes list, however this is an older post.

If issues persist after a few days you can check in with a Moderator by

cicking the bubble comment circle on the bottom right-hand side of your screen,

@elBez how long you have ported your number into PM?

It might take some time for incoming call and text to come.  Usually it takes around 2-4 hours.  However, even you are getting incoming calls and text from friends, some provider (smaller one like VoIP providers like Fongo, or so ) will take longer to "learn" your new home for your phone number

Also, it's know that financial firms text might not work for couple days, it could be done as a security measure as well as it takes time for the system to learn your new home.

so, if you are already getting incoming calls and text, no worry, those text from financial firms will come eventually

If you are not even  getting incoming calls or text at all, just keep reboot your phone every 15 mins and it will work soon
