US Roaming data, talk and text

Gandalf
Good Citizen / Bon Citoyen

Hi there,

I’ve heard that the 3G technology is phasing out in the USA market therefore making 3G services unavailable for some providers when roaming south of the border. Promis enrolled from Costco is a good example.

This said, is this the case for PublicMboile also with the US Roam offers?

Thanks

@Gandalf since we can still access both T-Mobile and AT&T's LTE network for data and text, so, for that two components, it's business as usual

Only trouble is voice.  Voice is totally relying on T-Mobile's 2G network.  it is impressive on paper (on the coverage map online : https://www.gsma.com/coverage/#466)  , but how well it does in practice?  It seems like major city is ok, but not outside of it.  And surprisingly, I think I saw at least 2 posts complaining about lack of TMobile 2G connection in NYC.

I would say, I am glad PM has been handling well in case the roaming does not work well,  they never hesitate to refund the roaming charge.   So, they leave the option open (unlike Fido Prepaid removed US roaming completely)

I would not trust US roaming talk.  T-Mobile 2G network was never really that extensive.  Data is fine though.  With data and a little improvisation and you have talk and text as well.

I can't see any of this getting any better until VoLTE is introduced.  However, what doesn't make sense is how it's not only voice services while roaming that people are complaining about. The phasing out of the 3g networks in the U.S. shouldn't have much effect on text messaging and data services as long as the customer has a LTE-capable device.
