Bought a US add-on that I will start to use tomorrow.
I understand roaming needs to be turned on but I also read you need to switch to a T-Mobile apn.
Did I understand that correctly?

Well, I got it going. I left Public as the APN and T-MOBILE 4G as the provider. Thanks for the help guys.

@dabr- hairbag1 and I and some others have tried to connect to AT&T. It scans and sees it of course but when selecting it it spins around for a bit and then says it can't connect or words to that effect. So T-Mobile is the only thing that will connect. Thus why I say to just leave networks on automatic. When we had AT&T then you might find different coverages in different areas and so it could be useful to manually switch from one to the other. The phone could even do that automatically but then each time it switches you get the welcome to the US text.
Then we've had others like hycm53 that tried after they got volte enabled and they had roaming and they were in the states. No go.
@Philshare- regarding the apn, I had tried fiddling with it but my phone didn't let me. Whether that's the phone or the network I can't be sure. But as I said, it doesn't need to be changed.

When you're in USA, your phone will automatically connect to T Mobile if not manually connect to T Mobile, don't change APN settings.

The information that you have read is incorrect. Your APN settings shouldn't be changed to T-Mobe. The Public Mobile APN settings should be used.

@softech Yes, there have been lots of posts about AT&T issues but for some reason I thought it was only a problem in Alaska. Thanks for confirming that AT&T is no longer a viable partner with PM roaming.

@dabr it has not been working for almost a year. We were hoping VoLTE would change it, but so far no one reported back with a success with AT&T.. let's hope they will be back soon..hope

Yes, leave the phone on automatic connections. Set it to LTE (etc). Turning on roaming is just for data. So fine if you bought data. You don't need to do anything with an apn. Data and text should be fine when in a coverage area. Which can vary.
Talk is the problem. If your phone has been enabled for volte then you should have no problem. If the phone shows 2G/GSM in those network settings then also good. So hopefully it will switch down to 2G when you on a call. Sometimes you might have to manually switch down to 2G. But some phones can't be switched down to 2G. Not so good.

@softech Actually I just assumed AT&T are still PM's partner for roaming. Is that not the case anymore?

@dabr still have faith with AT&T?? LoL

what kind of phone do you have??
generally speaking, ch4xk your network connection to see if you see it connects to T-Mobile. If not , you will need to change the Network connection from Automatic to Manual, then select T-Mobile.
If you have voice roaming in your addon, try to enable VoLTE to see if you can make and receive calls. If not , then change the Preferred network type or Network mode to 2G and see if voice works

@Philshare You can try either T-Mobile or AT&T although in some areas of the US T-Mobile is the only option and you may need to change to 2G network mode on your phone for calling.
edited to correct info.
