Some text messages not arriving

BrianV

Hello!

I've been with Public since last December. A few weeks ago, I began to suspect that I am not receiving some text messages, and now I can confirm it.

1. My brother-in-law texted me last night while I was sitting next to him. It never arrived.
2. Various services that text for Two Factor Authentication don't seem to get through.

3. There's group chat's that I definitely only receive *some* of the messages.

I still get some messages, but there's definitely some I don't as well. What can I do?

You can't go far wrong (in terms of compatibility and reliability) with a smartphone's boring default SMS/MMS app.

You'd be surprised. The default app on my phone (Redmi Note 7) didn't handle group messages at all, especially when including iPhone participants, and struggled with normal MMS.

That said, when I do open the default messaging app, the 'missing' messages are not there either. I don't believe they are arriving at all.

Textra has always had issues.

You can try reinstalling the Textra app. Or select a different app. You can't go far wrong (in terms of compatibility and reliability) with a smartphone's boring default SMS/MMS app.

There's all sorts of explanations and speculations about what Textra's problems might be and about how to fix or workaround them - but in the end, it looks like Textra has already had many "known" issues on many devices for years which still remain uncorrected.

Only the group messages require data, and they have always 'caught up' after periods where data was unavailable or turned off. 'Normal' text messages have always worked fine without data.

It's not just missing MMS messages - I also have plain old SMS that aren't getting through.

I use Textra on Android for SMS / MMS.

I'm guessing you're using an app which requires cellular data, which won't work across WiFi data, and that data (or permission to use data) is sometimes unavailable. iMessage or something similar?

@BrianV, I have had that issue to while trying to text my daughter where she wouldn't get my messages.

1) I had to tap on where it said sent and then select send as SMS/MMS and she was able to get it.  So (on Android) I hit the three dots in the top right and selected details and turned on Only send SMS and MMS messages and that seems to have fixed it.

2) I don't have anything for this as I think many people experience it but I haven't yet.

3) the messages you are missing in a group chat are they from iPhone user and could they possible be using iMessage?  Again assuming you are on Android.

@BrianV

If above suggestions, not helping....

Maybe try your SIM card in another phone.  To see whether you have the same issue.

As mentioned above, it could be an issue with RCS messaging (for Android) or iMessaging (for iPhone), which requires active data or Wifi.  Either turn these options off or leave data on all the time.

If Android phone, maybe also try a different messaging app.

Try rebooting your phone.

Try adjusting Chat messages options (if an Android device - iPhone will be similar with iMessaging)

  1. click Messaging app,
  2. click 3 little dots top right,
  3. select Settings,
  4. under Chat settings, scroll to "Select default messaging type",
  5. toggle it to Automatic or Text/multimedia msg

@BrianV

Try clearing cache of the messaging app. Do any updates if available.

Also try setting your network on 3G to see if it helps.

Lastly, try to Reset network settings.
