I'll leave you guys with a neat trick I used when in the USA on PM before I leave to freedom thanks to the forced point change.
If you need SMS while in the USA, just get a data package and turn your SMS into an MMS. To do this you can just add a Subject or send pictures. It'll look a little weird but will save you a few bucks. On android hit the meatball/hamburger menu and select "Add Subject". Some texting apps you can long press on the send button and it'll expose the subject line. No idea how to do this on iPhone.
SMS incoming is free and if you forward your calls to something like fongo/freephoneline.ca you have everything you need for just the data add-on.

Yes, in Canada, mms does not count towards your data, but I think in US, it needs data and will count towards your data bucket and hence your trick work
