SMS / Text messaging

johnprince

Hi all,

Wondering about an issue I am experiencing with sending texts. Sometimes they come up as failed and they ask me to switch over to "send using sms"..

Is there something that I can do so that all my text messages always get sent via sms as opposed to however they are being sent?

May not be describing it well, so please let me know what further information would help..

Thanks!

I think you misunderstood my message. I do not allow any caching of data on my device, not only for sms, but for anything.

Sorry @johnprince @ to clarify did you get to the bottom of it?

@johnprince

I think you misunderstood my suggestion. Each app in your phone stores data in "data" and in the "cache". Generally you want to leave the data storage alone because it contains important data if not backed up that you may not want to lose like picture texts. The data stored in the cache is expendable. If you allow too much data to accumulate in each app's storage cache it can take up too much memory, storage room on your phone etc....not only will your phone begin to slow down and not work properly if an app like messaging contains too much data in its cache it stops working properly or stops working altogether. That's what I meant by clear your messaging app cache.

No problem. Hope it is all clear now.

Hi @johnprince ha, we were all confused with your comment earlier .  Yes, life is a lot different now.  We got more different features for free.

I do not know.

What are you talking about? This has nothing to do with bell / rogers / telus charges for it.

I mean that years and years ago, the cellular companies started charging customers for text messages (sms) - which is/was complete nonsense - especially if you are technically inclined and understand how they are sent over the cellular nework. No.

I do not cache any messages - that is not the issue.

Hi @johnprince  "it does if you look at the pricing of bell / rogers / telus... "  what you meant?  are you saying your friends there need to pay to receive MMS??

@johnprince

MMS is sent thru a separate server with pm. You can send and receive MMS with no data in your plan you only need data enabled for it to work. Go into your Settings>>Apps>>Messaging app >>  Clear your cache. See if that helps. If it's one or a few contacts you may have too much stored content for those contacts. If you need the content back up your messaging to your Google account or your Cloud. Then delete the content of those contacts and try sending messages again.

But Public Mobile openly advertises “unlimited picture messaging” on the Plans page ...?

So whatever bell / rogers /  telus charges for it should not stop you from using it on your PM plan. If that's the only thing stopping you from turning on data to test picture (MMS) messaging, don't worry. Give it a try, the results will help us to better troubleshoot your problem👍

@johnprince  - yes PM allows MMS. But, you need to turn on your data to send and receive MMS messages.

Just toggle it on and off as needed.

MMS sending and receiving does not use up your plan data allotment, so no worries there.

Lol.. it does if you look at the pricing of bell / rogers / telus... 🙂

Maybe even see if I can pay more attention as to when it happens and maybe get a screen cap.

@johnprince - if you are referring to turning off Chat Features on your phone, I will share another little tidbit of info. I found out about.

My Chat Features is TURN OFF on my phone device.

But, I noticed that if the person I am texting, also android and has their Chat Features ON, then I found another setting within THAT CONTACT in my messages app to help get texts through.

Try this, if you are having an issue with one particular person.

Go to their text messages in your phone and choose those 3 dots (top, right corner) to get into the details of that contact.

Then choose, and turn on, "Only send SMS and MMS messages".

Dont have specific options for a particular user - just an option to get into the general app settings from the hamburger menu.

@johnprince wrote:

Ok. Now, with that option turned off, I get an error when sending a pic.

"Message not sent: Invalid message".

Does PM not allows MMS?

Further to this, I have setup/confirmed the correct APN.

No, I am not using iMessage.

No...you are not using iMessage @johnprince  ?

edit, what model phone do you have?

Sometimes finicky things can be fixed with either:

  • a restart of your phone, or
  • removing and re-inserting your SIM card, or
  • reset of your device's network settings.

@johnprince  in case you are using Android..check if you have your Chat Features turned on. If so, turn that feature off (at least, that is what i'd recommend):

Disable your Chat Features:

  1. Open Messages
  2. Tap More options > Settings > Chat features
  3. Turn Enable chat features off

@johnprince sounds like you are using iMessage, is that correct?

Ensure you have SMS and MMS enabled in your messages app on your iphone. This way you do not need to send regular texts through wifi or data.
