Please explain why I was unable to make phone calls or receive phone calls and what I can do to avoid it since this is the second time it has happened

my phone is now working. I did do a reset but nothing happened. The problem was solved by getting a new eSIM.

If still having issues, a new SIM card will not help this situation. If you have a physical SIM card, maybe try the SIM card in another phone. That will help determine whether hardware issue versus PM service.
Did you try a network reset of phone as suggested earlier?

I was told I need to get another SIM card. I went to enter my MasterCard number and it was refused. I tried another card and it was refused. Both of them are valid cards. Please advise

try reboot your phone, then Reset network Settings
also, try your sim card on another phone

SuddenlyI am not able to make calls or receive calls on my iPhone. I can still use the phone to make and receive text and send emails.

More details would be helpful. Does text work? data?
What phone are you using right now? There have been several reports with talk issues with certain model phones (usually international phones, older phones).

the planned maintenance is complete now...your service should working again. Try rebooting cellphone and try again. Is text and data working as expected ? Dial 611 to hear current plan status.
