I'm new here. Just signed up for this plan and when I went to the US today I received a message saying I needed roaming add ons to use my phone. Calling didn't work...

What phone are you using? Phone calls in the US require a VoLTE compatible device:

Alright thank you Softech. It helps to know the message is generic. Data seemed to work, just calling didn't. I will try a few of your suggestions

first, the sms you got is normal.  It is a default message everyone got whether or not you have the Canada-US plan or US roaming

and is it just a voice problem? or data as well?

if data , make sure you turn on Mobile roaming data on your phone

if voice,  make sure VoLTE is enabled on the device setting.  And if it does not work, try to change the Network to T-Mobile ONLY, and change  Preferred Network Type or Network Mode to 2G and see if the calls go through.
Also, you can download VoIP app TextNow as a workaround to make calls and text if you have Wifi or if your roaming has data component and data  is working
