Porting number from Freedom

tpetryni

My husband is nervous about changing from Freedom as its his business phone.  I think he should change to Public as Freedom has terrible reception in our house and I've been having a great reception with Public.  How long does the porting process take?  Any watchouts?  He is nervous that he will lose his number.

I was in the same situation as I had a business number with freedom.

1.) Buy a Public Mobile SIM card.

2.) Take the freedom sim out, put the new one in.

3.) Activate your new sim card online. activate.publicmobile.ca

4.) It will first ask what your "alternative" number is. Don't put your freedom business number you want to move. Use a backup number.. eg friend/spouse.

5.) Enter the sim card number that came with the SIM.

6.) It will then ask if you want to import an existing number. Type in your business number you want to bring over from freedom mobile.

7.) It will ask for proof that you own this number. There are many ways to prove it. Choose "freedom mobile account number. Log into your freedom mobile account online. Up the top of the page when you log in is your freedom account number. Get that account number and paste it into the field that asked for your existing freedom account number.

All done... Sit and wait for an hr or 2. In the first 20 mins you will be able to make calls using your number you transferred over from freedom. Then about 40 mins after that you can recieve calls from your number you transferred over.

You will then get an email from Freedom confirming that the number has been ported over and your freedom account will be automatically closed.

At no point during this time will you ever have to contact freedom mobile. May I also add... Dont cancel your freedom account before doing this.

Good luck!

@tpetryniGenerally for business use, I won't recommend Public Mobile or any lowest tiered providers like Chatr or Lucky, since they do lack support when things go bad. Go at least with Koodo, Virgin or Fido. Koodo has some pretty good Black Friday sales now, especially if you want a phone.

If you insist on Public Mobile, I would draw up a backup plan and perhaps an alternate account just in case things like Autopay fails.

This may be an inconvenient solution, but if you have an extra phone around you could put the new (PM) SIM in the other phone. This way, your husband could keep using the old SIM until the port happens and it switches over to the new SIM. To test which one is working, you could just call the number occasionally and see which phone rings.

I might be wrong, but even if it takes a little while for the transfer to happen, there shouldn't be a time period where calling the number goes nowhere.

(Just make sure not to cancel the old account - it will automatically happen once they transfer the phone number anyway.)

As long as the information you provide is correct and accurate the port can be done in minutes up to a couple of hours.  Now if this is a business phone I am being completely honest here when I say I wouldn't recommend PM for anyone that is using the line for a business.  If there are issues with the system (they are getter fewer I do believe) it could be a while before they get fixed and if you rely on your phone for your income being without service can really impact your business.  That being said the issues of no service for long periods of time seem to be going away and the response times from the moderators is greatly improved.  If  he is already on Freedom, your reception will be better as the phone will have access to a larger network.

With improvements in the moderator team bench strength these days, I think the 48+ hour response times are a thing of the past.  The risks of extended service interruptions are far lower than the risk of a missed call on a bad network.  If Freedom is known to have bad reception in a particular location, then switching to this service would offer a better overall experience even for mission critical applications.

I am an experienced ex Wind/Freedom customer that ported all my lines here successfully.  The key with all number ports is to enter information correctly.  Only enter the account number, skip the IMEI and account PIN fields.  Do not put spaces or hyphens when entering the account number.  That is pretty much it.  The number port will complete in 30 minutes.  If not, then something went off the rails.

I know I am going to get heat for suggesting that number porting be done after initial activation.  That is what I recommend instead of submitting a number port during initial activation.  Both work, but I think the former is safer if there is such a thing.

@tpetryni  Can take up to 4 hours to complete. You will need the Freedom account number, name on the account and the phone number ready.

Just activate a new Public sim card and chose a temporary number. Don't forget to provide your referral code. Once the sim has been activated and everything works access selfserve and select the change number option. Provide the Freedom info from above and submit the port request. That is it. Continue to use the Freedom card until it stops working. Once it stops it means the port has completed and you can start using your PM sim.

It takes a few hours to transfer (port) your number.
