Poor phone call quality

shimdog

I found that my phone call audio quality is much worse than if I just record sound on my phone. I tested this by calling my voicemail, making a message and playing it back. I can't understand why the audio quality is so much worse. This makes it difficult for people to hear me while talking on the phone. Any ideas?

Try toggling airplane mode on/off.

they've started shutting down 3g towers. where in Canada do you live? are you in an apartment? are there lots of high rises and trees?

you can try resetting the sim and resetting your network settings to see if that helps

Do you know if this issue occurs in other areas? To help in troubleshooting if it is your phone, or the phone on the "other end" I recommend tests with someone using a landline, and not a mobile phone on their end as well.

Very useful for testing are these "echo test" numbers, of which there are two Canadian access numbers. Great for testing the audio quality without having to bother someone else:

  • +1 416 342 9562 - Toronto, ON
  • +1 250 412 5922 - Victoria, BC

As per https://thetestcall.blogspot.com/

During a test call, try switching between each of speakerphone, toggling the call "on hold", and external headset wired and/or bluetooth to help narrow down if it is the microphone in your device or not.

Phone call audio quality wouldn't be affected by the phone be set to either LTE or 3g.  All phone calls at Public Mobile are on the HSPA/"3g" network.

@shimdog did you try using wired headset or Bluetooth headset?   This could still be the microphone on your device.

Also, try in different area, if it is network,  you should get better voice quality in different area.

And what phone do you have?

@RossN @BEER it's not a problem with the phone. Sound recording and playing works fine. Problem is just with call quality.

Glad to hear that ..... perhaps it's just poor reception ... I get that all the time when I'm in malls and parking garages.

Unfortunately problems like this  happen to electronic devices , My old iPhone developed the same problem. Try to re-boot your phone and use it's music app to test the sound. I you don't have music on your phone then google a song and play it and find out if it's your phone or just your voice mail app. In my case I completely wiped my phone and re-set it that did fix the problem for a while. Good luck.....
