Plans working outside Canada US Mexico

Hi there,

I’m travelling to Taiwan and once  here I realized I can not get text messages or make / receive phone calls from my number and to pay for . While in Canada the service worked great but outside of Canada like in Taiwan it doesn’t work at all. I just need  the number to be active here just for emergency situations. No data, just voice and to be able to receive text messages if needed.

Does anyone know more about this ?

hi @Cristian2 sorry, that is no way to setup the voicemail in such case.  Support won't be able to help either

I do have another app I can make phone calls that’s not the problem. I can also call my own number and find the voice mail. The problem is when I switched to public mobile I forgot to initialize / set up my voice mail. In order  to do that they need to send me a temporary password  as a text message which I won’t get until I m back.

it is a bit late then.  But you can still try to setup VoIP app TextNow or Fongo.   You might have trouble setting up TextNow when you are not in North America, but you should be able to setup Fongo.  They are similar app

you cannot forward message to the TextNow or Fongo phone number.  But you can use the app to make free call to yourself to retrieve voicemail.  Call your phone number using the app, then when you hear the VM greeting, press * and enter your voice mail pin.  In this case, you can at least get the voicemail message. You can also call use the app to call any Canadian number so you can make call back your doctor's office or so

I will look into text now at some point. How do you forward calls  there ? But it s too late now to do anything as I m already outside of Canada and I can not set up my voice mail either :(.

The solution to get a VoIP app TextNow and got anther 10 digits phone number, then forward all your calls before your trip to the TextNow number seems to be the best in your case.  Doctor office can either get to you via TextNow, which the app will ring, or leave a voicemail there, and you can use TextNow to retrieve the VM

that is the only workarounds, or you might want to move to a carrier with roaming service

Hi there, thank you for your reply. 

Yes I know about all the esim, whats up  and all that.

I was referring to calls received  from dr office  or so that I can not call them and give them other numbers to call to. I was hoping public mobile would connect to another carrier and the phone can be used to receive text messages or phone calls only. I can not initiate my voice mail as I can not receive text messages while in Taiwan. 
Any suggestions ?

hi @Cristian2 sorry, PM has no roaming service outside of US and Mexico. So, you won't get your PM service in Taiwan, you won't get text or calls or data

you need to use local data sim or travel esim.  You can setup a VoIP app like TextNow, then forward all calls to the number assigned by TextNow and get calls using the app.  But you won't be able to forward text.  But you can give the TextNow phone number to your friends and ask them to text you there

other members here would ask you to use Whatsapp or iMessage/Facetime to keep connected with friends
