When the iphone number is being acquired for facetime and messages, it takes a very long time. The email address via Telus is acquired almost immediately. So why the long acquisition time?
Thanks

Thanks again for your thoughts. It was Apple that suggested I contact my isp which is Telus, & I did, who referred me to PM. It's from Apple I found out about the long acquiring time...hours! It's not a new phone (6s, had for several years).
Like most things these days, we go around in circles. It is an ongoing problem I've had (FaceTime only) after upgrading my iMac from Catalina to Sonoma, & at the same time I upgraded my iPad (9th generation) to ios17. The problem actually is FaceTiming each other (using the same Apple ID, which we have always done previously with Catalina), not with non-household members.
So not sure if working right now or not!

Hard to say, but I doubt it’s a PM issue as mine was verified almost instantly when I switched to my new iPhone a few weeks ago. The verification comes from your provider speaking with the Apple servers so it’s really up to the servers to deal with the request which they say can take up to 24 hours. Your email address is likely the same one you used for your AppleID so it’s already verified so didn’t need to go through the same process.

Thanks again for your diligence in replies. I did get it working (most times), but maybe it is a PM problem. I'll keep in mind your suggestion for next time.
Regards

Perhaps I am just misunderstanding your question but are you wondering why your number wasn’t automatically set for those? Whereas your email was immediately set to receive iMessages and FaceTimes?
Once you set a number for FaceTime and iMessages the network provider has to verify your number with Apple which can take up to 24 hours before you see the little check mark beside your number. Your email address is most likely already verified as I’m assuming it’s the same one you use for your AppleID.
If it continues to take a long time to have your number verified you can try turning off both iMessage and Facetime and then turning off your phone. Then upon powering it back on you’ll turn iMessage and FaceTime back on.

Thanks for quick reply...both of those already done. It's just the length of time for acquiring that I don't understand.

Go into your settings on your iPhone and go to the settings for messages, Make sure that your number with Public Mobile is selected in the send and receive setting. Do the same in the settings for the FaceTime app.
